Here are some photos of Stormin taken by Murray Shields at the water tower at Warden and Eglington,in Toronto in early September of 2010. Also photos by me BIGFRANK taken at the corner of his street,on a neighbors tv antena. It was a real surprise to see when I came out the side door of my house. He was eating a Northern Flicker. I was able to ID him from the band and blue tape he had. I was excited immediately when I saw the blue tape, knowing it was a bird we had banded in Toronto(though I do know other places use the tape now). I also made a video of Stormin eating which can be seen here. Stormin In Scarborough. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7x7dx0T35ZA#)

Im sure I let the girls know of the photos, video and sightings at the time, but just noticed the topic so figured others who missed the original posts would like them. We check every time we go by the watertower. I have a network of raptor watching friends who are eagle eyed and keep their eyes peeled no matter where they are in our area of Toronto. Place where we see something special like a Peregrine Falcon,we give special attention.

This was the site where Irving from Chicago was the dad and he just recently died after coming in contact with a wire. He left his mate and 3 eyases but there was word that a new male was seen with her. I wonder if he took over the daddy duties and how the eyases are doing.

Kris: Frank told me that yesterday for the first time, Stormin was observed bringing food to the female and she accepted it and took it to feed her offspring. They will continue to monitor but that is a very good sign .
Apologies for not mentioning it earlier. :stupid:

While I feel awful that Irving was killed, I'm also happy that Stormin' has stepped up and the female (do we know where she's from? Is she named?) is accepting him so far. These birds bring such bittersweet moments...

That's OK. Good to hear that it's working out for them. It's really very difficult to raise 3 eyases alone.

And here is the 'official post' from CPF identifying Stormin as the new resident male and more great news about his new role
!!! Canada Square Resident Adults UpdateJune 02, 2011 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton Tracy Simpson Reports:
First off I would like to apologize for the lack of posts as I have been at a banding event every day and it seems in every corner of the province!! It has been wonderful to be able to celebrate these banding events as another opportunity to participate in the monitoring of this species at risk and equally exhausting!! Here is the update that we have all been anxiously awaiting.
There has certainly been much to watch at the Canada Square nest site and we have been documenting a great deal of behaviour observed between the new male and the resident female. One of the best observations came from Neil Armstrong of Northern Realty Advisors Ltd when he checked on the three chicks from the observation room on Monday May 30th. The new male was on the ledge with the chicks alone for a full five minutes and he exhibited nothing but curiosity for the young ones. Thanks to Neil we were able to get a band number and confirm that the new male on-site is none other than Stormin’, a 2009 hatch from the Toronto Sheraton Hotel. Stormin’ has been spotted several times over the past year in the Warden and Eglinton area as well as several other places throughout the east GTA. His tenacity paid off with a territory to call his own that came furnished with a female and chicks already in place!!
The next big step for this male would be to adopt the young as his own by participating in not just the defence of the site and young but food provision as well. Bruce and Lyn have been attending regularly in the hopes of witnessing such an event and their efforts were rewarded today with an observation of Stormin’ flying up to the nest ledge with food!! The resident female flew into the ledge and demanded he hand it over which he relinquished half heartedly. The female then proceeded into the ledge to feed the chicks and Stormin’ took this as his cue to leave. It is now clear that Stormin’ has accepted the role of resident male at the Canada Square nest site and is participating in the rearing of the young family. From the vacancy of the territory left by the death of Irving to the adoption of the family by the new male Stormin’, the change over came full circle in a matter of 12 days. A huge thank you goes out to Bruce, Lyn and Neil Armstrong at Northern Realty Advisors Ltd for all of their efforts in documenting this event so thoroughly.

June 06, 2011 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton Mark Nash Reports:
Just a short note to let you all know that the banding date has been booked and confirmed for Friday June 10th at 10 am in the morning! Its going to be a very busy day indeed as we have also confirmed and booked the Scarborough Yellow Pages banding this same day at 2 pm in the afternoon.
An update on the Canada Square nest site peregrines,,, the best news in that the new resident male has been providing food to the resident female and actively involved in the family rearing process, despite that he is not the “sire” of the young hatchlings.
We have been monitoring the nest site very closely since the original resident male named “Irving” - (banded Black B over Green 44,, - who was produced in 2007 in Chicago Ill. USA.) was killed in a collision with a cable several blocks from the Yonge & Eglinton nest site just over a week ago.
As you may recall, a new adult male was literally on territory and courting the resident unbanded female as we retrieved Irving’s body from the Toronto Animal Services.
The new male, identified as an adult male named “Stormin”, was produced at the Toronto Sheraton nest site in 2009, and banded Black 30 over Black Y.
The resident unbanded adult female was not eager to accept “Stormin” and there were some very tense moments observed as she initially tried to drive Stormin out of the territory and protect her chicks.
Today, not only has she accepted his presence, but Stormin has been observed participating in the rearing of the young hatchlings! He has been providing food for the resident female despite the fact that the young hatchlings are not his! At this point, it appears that Stormin has fully accepted the responsibility of the resident male, as he has been observed both defending the territory and continues to provide food for the resident female. She has also now allowed Stormin for the first time into the nest ledge unattended with the hatchlings. While he is not actually brooding the hatchlings or actually fed them himself, he has not taken any action to hurt them at this point.
Stay tuned………..

Its a shame about Irving, but life in the Peregrine world can be harsh. Having watched him last season,so abley raise his young and all it involved,I cant help but be alittle sad. That said I am thrilled the resident male is "one of ours". I attended Stormin's banding, and friends and I spotted Stormin several times in Scarborough over the past year. He is even the one I spotted on an a tv antena at the end of my block, photographed and ID'd. Now he is the resident male and stepDaddy of the young falcons. Its always amazing to hear back about one of our birds. I will be at the banding at Canada Square.

The juveniles have accepted their new dad without a problem, and he’s doing a great job of being a foster parent! July 03, 2011 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton CPF Postmaster Reports:
Canada Square report for July 3rd 2011. I was only out for just over an hour today during which time I saw the five peregrines. It was pretty warm out and there was not much activity from them. When I arrived I found the female on the ledge below the nest on Canada Square. She then flew off with a pigeon, circled around and landed on the nest level ledge north of the wall. She plucked feathers furiously and then ate for 30 minutes. A while later the male flew in to the same ledge with a food package and I heard him give a call. It took a minute before one of the youngsters responded by flying in and tucking into the food. I think this was also a pigeon. There was only one major flying event by a juvenile who flew to the top of the shorter condo tower. Attempting to perch on one of the vents on the roof was tricky but he managed it. Other than that nothing extraordinary took place. When I left the mom was on the south face of Rio-Can. I think two of the juveniles may have been on the Rio-Can roof and the third one was on the Heart and Stroke east face roof. Canada Square Adult Check In and News December 01, 2011 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton Tracy Simpson Reports:
Today we have both an update and some news regarding the resident pair at the Canada Square Building. First off, a check in with the pair as reported by Lyn:
Two peregrines were spotted on top window uprights of the Rio-Can building, south face. All fluffed up against the wind they were in the full sun and looked cold. No activity from them but I did not stay out in the cold for very long!
Lyn
Thank you Lyn for keeping an eye on Stormin and his female!!
In the news department, the unbanded female that has been resident here for the last 3 years has been given a name by Neil Armstrong and his amazing staff at Northam Realty Advisors Ltd. Their team has decided to call her Haven, a most incredible name for this bird!
Thanks go out to the buidling management for their efforts to name their adult female and Lyn for her continued vigilance of this pair.

Stormin and Haven Observed
June 03, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Frank Butson Reports:
Canada Square Peregrine report June 2 2012 After very little activity on Thursday and no observation yesterday, due to the rain, I thought I should get out and check on the peregrines. When I arrived at 5:10 pm Haven was sitting on the wall above the nest on Canada Square and Stormin was on the south face of Rio-Can. It was very cool out and both peregrines looked *chilly* and fluffed up against the weather. After twenty minutes of no activity, the sun came out and that was Haven’s opportunity. She flew off. Two minutes later, she was on the northwest corner of the *black building* over the TTC garage, plucking feathers madly from a pigeon. It was the feathers floating in the breeze which alerted me to her whereabouts. Shortly thereafter she grabbed the food parcel and flew south off the black building before turning and beginning to climb back to the height of the nest ledge. It was a bit of a struggle but she managed. Stormin kept his distance and ten minutes after Haven had disappeared on the nest ledge he flew to the northwest corner of the black building in the hopes of finding scraps. All he managed to find were some feathers. He took off alongside the building flying south, around the bottom end of it and out of sight. Fifteen minutes later I was still looking for him and heard chup-chup-chup twice. It appeared to come from the nest but I was not sure. I scanned all around but could not see the reason for the chatter. Eight minutes later Haven flew to the south face of RC, followed by Stormin who perched one floor higher than she was. I did not see him fly from the nest but I wonder if he had arrived at the nest when I heard the chup-chup-chup? Haven did not stay long before flying to the ledge on one of the windows on the concrete wall on the west face of Canada Square. It appeared to me that she had a drink of water. Is this possible? I guess there were little collections of water left in places after the rain from yesterday. Haven then returned to the RC building, same perch. Once more her stay was short lived and she flew back to the wall at the nest. Stormin flew around the RC building and headed north on Yonge Street. It took almost half an hour for Stormin to return and when he did he sat right at the top of the southwest corner of Rio-Can. Haven spent the whole time on her perch on Canada Square above the nest. At 7:15 I left them in those same places. BIGFRANK’s note: Its very possible Lyn saw Haven drink some pooled water. Peregrines dont need to drink water, they get their moisture from the blood of prey, but they will drink water infrequently and also bathe.

Simcoe Fledges and Has a Big Day Out!! June 16, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton Tracy Simpson Reports: I was late arriving this morning, at 9:35. Marion came in five minutes later so we do not know whether the eyases were fed before that or not. Apart from the odd bit of flapping and running along edges there was not much happening. There were still two peregrines on the level one down from the nest and one on the nest level. Haven was sitting with her back to the world on the balcony railing below them. The youngster left on the nest ledge was winding up his wings and then, exhausted he would rest for hours! We did not see Stormin until after 1:00pm. His visit was short-lived! Haven flew in and out but did not make any real effort to coax a youngster off the ledge. Haven visited her larder on the balcony floor below the level where the babies were and hopping back to the top of that balcony wall and ate. A bit of the activity in the afternoon was created by Haven flying from here to there and also checking on the youngsters. Lance and Charmane had visited and Caroline joined us for the watch. There still was not much activity. The heat of the day had affected us all I think. Marion had picked up a coffee and I had taken a break, still nothing. When Caroline said she was going to pick up something cool I thought nothing of it. At precisely 5:12 pm we had lift-off!! What an epic first flight this was! The fledgling flew from his level towards the black building but changed his mind and direction and flew up Duplex Avenue, across Eglinton Avenue and towards the Rio-Can building where he had seen his mom and dad perch and the window uprights all these weeks and though he would do the same! He did not quite make it and touched a window, fluttered a bit and then Haven steered him away from Rio-Can towards the Canada Square building! He had maintained altitude all the way until he brushed the window! So whilst directing his flight Haven also nudged him upwards to the height of Canada Square’s roof!! He MADE it!!!! Haven is a wonderful mother!! She flew the whole circuit at his side, in front or below him the whole way. She was just amazing. He had good strong flight and did very well. He had left Canada Square half a level below the nest level, flown a complete and very wide circle and ended up HIGHER by two floors and a bit than when he had lift-off!!! No mean feat for a first flight. The very sad part about this was that Caroline Lance and Maggie missed this first voyage. However, we did not know it but there was much more to come! I sort of thought that he had made such a long trip that he would stay put for the rest of the afternoon and sleep up there. Hmmmmm!! Stormin put in another appearance, lengthier than before. He ate his food parcel. Haven flew in with a food parcel, onto the north edge of Canada Square, right under the fledgling’s nose! He protested she ignored him, had something to eat and then flew onto the nest ledge and dropped of the remains for Solar! Brisk protested and was ignored! Maggie arrived and then Lance and Charmane. Then Tracy arrived and we repeated the story of this epic flight to everyone who would listen. I managed to get a picture of the band tape on this valiant little bird’s leg and also of the one left on the ledge. Simcoe, the eldest, was first to fly at, I believe, forty days old!!! I took a picture of the band tape on the bird left on the ledge – it was red indicating that Brisk was still in place. At 7:27pm Simcoe took flight again and Haven was with him. He did a semi-circle from the roof of Canada Square, over the old TTC bus bays and he and Haven turned but Haven turned more than he did and was headed back towards Canada Square whereas Simcoe was headed across Eglinton again. He maintained altitude all the way to the 22nd floor balcony wall of the apartment building behind the *gold* building. He brushed the wall, tumbled one, two, three floors down, RECOVERED and flew over the gold building and back over Eglinton where Haven met him. He flew towards Canada Square west wall and lost a bit of height but Haven was right there and coaxed him into landing on the *black building*. He appeared at the very northwest corner and had a think! Then he moved from there along the zig-zag roof top to the third *zig* in from the corner. He disappeared and re-appeared and sat again. It was 7:46 pm and time to fly again and he did!! He flew from the black building roof towards Canada Square north end of the building. He had lost some altitude after contact with the *glass* wall but Haven launched off the RC and helped him regain enough height to the black building again where he had a bit of a clumsy and hard landing! He was fine though! 7:55 pm Simcoe flew again, right across the old TTC bus bays across Eglinton (again) and onto the north west corner of the gold building at the corner of Duplex and Eglinton. There he looked around and began walking south along the edge of the roof on Eglinton, paused long enough for me to MISS a photo-op, disappeared from the edge and next thing I knew he was airborne again and flew towards the black building via the concrete wall on Canada Square. There he hung onto a grid, briefly, With Haven’s wonderful guidance and assistance he flew to a black structure on top of the black building where he caught his breath and we caught ours. I have no idea what time he next flew as I was barely keeping up now with camera, binoculars, notebook, pen (which I temporarily lost) and traffic lights but he flew again from the top of the structure on the black building to Canada Square and managed to get as far as the venting on the concrete wall, low down where he hung on for a few minutes. Again with Haven’s help he flew once more and she guided him to the black building and attempted to help him with altitude but he was a tired little falcon but this time and settled on a narrow ledge where the black building meets bare concrete! Haven joined him and sat with him for a while before flying off. I think he really wanted to get back to the nest ledge but just did not make it today! After all that excitement Haven finally *chuk-chuked* and had a serious talk to her first hatched and told him to stay put!! This he finally did. There was a bit more flying – all Stormin and Havens! Haven flew onto the nest ledge, Stormin flew onto the nest ledge. When Stormin flew off he flew between the two condos and landed on some tiny ledge-cum-decoration on a building beyond them. He stayed put. Haven finally put in a last appearance on the nest ledge and perched as I had seen her do so many times; back to the world and eye on her young. It was 9:36 and pitch dark when we left. At last look Simcoe was still on his last perch and the two eyases were on their levels on Canada Square. What an exhausting day for the fledge watchers and of course Simcoe and Haven. Thanks to everyone who pitched in and kept an eye on where Simcoe flew to and from; Marion, Caroline, Maggie, Lance and Tracy. Thanks too, to the many who took the time to stop and find out what we were doing. It is *open house* every day at the corner until the eyases have all fledged and have become strong flyers so do drop in! I have a strong feeling I missed reporting on one of Simcoe’s flights – I have no note of it but I feel something is missing. I have no doubt Tracy will add her impressions of the evening so watch for her report and photo’s

The Rescue of Brisk June 18, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Tracy Simpson Reports:
Marion told this story of the rescue and release. In order to find our little missing peregrine falcon, Marion went to Neil Armstrong of Northam Realty Advisors Limited for assistance. Marion searched the roof with no success. Neil Armstrong then took her to a floor overlooking the balconies to see if the fledgling was trapped on one. Success. Neil identified the suite immediately and took Marion there. Neil and Marion held out towels and corralled him in a corner then Marion dropped a towel over him but he scooted out of a corner and behind a planter and then dropped down about a twenty feet deep shaft. Marion asked if there was a ladder and rope available and Neil immediately called the Maintenance Department to bring the equipment. No sooner said than done. The ladder was put down the shaft and tied off for stability and Marion went down to effect the rescue. She caught him and carried him up the ladder in her arms. Once he was inside Marion gave him a thorough examination and pronounced him fit and healthy and identified him as Brisk, who fledged yesterday! So with a clean bill of health he was placed in the carrier and left. Neil went above and beyond the call and had the air conditioning switched on so that the office was cool for him. This evening, thanks go to Neil of Paragon Security for facilitating the release. Marion had to take Brisk out in a towel, carry him to the balcony and unwrap him. He stayed where he was released. Canadian Peregrine Foundation is very grateful to Neil Armstrong and his wonderful maintenance staff. It is this sort of action from Building Managers which is helping tremendously in assuring the rebuilding of a species once extirpated in Ontario. Sad News to Report at Canada Square June 24, 2012 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton Marion Nash Reports:
A call came into the office voice mail from a gentlemen who works in the Yonge and Eglinton area to inform us that one of our falcons was hit by a bus on Yonge St and did not survive. We have confirmed that it was little Brisk. It was very upsetting as we had hoped that since he seemed to be flying well after his first rescue that he would be a survivor but it was not to be.
Lyn and I have so far put in about 120 hours each at the Canada Square nest site and have conducted 2 rescues. Simcoe is flying very well and Solar has very much improved her flight skills. We hope the next couple days will see her flying with Mom, Dad and Simcoe high and strong.

Canada Square Has a Hatch!!! May 14, 2013 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton Tracy Simpson Reports: Yesterday I met up with Cameron from Northam Realty Advisors to confirm the presence of the first wee one at Canada Square. Upstairs on the ledge the winds were quite strong and Haven was covering her precious little package of hatchlings from the cold. We could clearly see the spent egg shell and the fluff of one or possibly two little chicks underneath her. In this cold and snappy weather, there was no way that she was giving up even the slightest of looks at her new family. Back outside I met up with Lyn and shared the great news of the hatchlings with her. We sat for a while on the watcher perch and watched Stormin on the south side of the Rio Can trying to preen in the gusty winds. Just as he would get his feathers all together the wind would come along and blow them out of place again. He gave up on his preen attenpt and took off on a recon flight over the nest ledge to see if Haven needed anything. He immediately circled back to the Rio Can as I am sure she gave him the “not yet” look. He stayed on the Rio Can for a while and then flew over to the nest building, retrieved a cache from the ledge next to Haven and flew around to the north side to prep. Lyn and I joked at how he was chowing down on the whole thing and not sharing and at that we parted company for the day. Just as I returned to my car and was driving north on Duplex, who should fly in but Stormin with the first dinner package of the day. He and Haven exchanged the food and a few choice words before he was shooed off the ledge so she could feed. He clearly wanted to do it himself but Haven would not allow him to do this yet, they’re too little. Congratulations Canada Square on your recent hatch and we look forward to the days to come with these little ones!! I have added a few pictures and tried to avoid the reflection of stuff in the glass. The little red bits are reflections from my sweater, sorry about that!

!!! Canada Square Banding Day June 05, 2013 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Marion Nash Reports:
I apologise at the outset for the omission of some names. Our thanks to all of the people who were instrumental in making this happen this year, namely: Neil Armstrong and Cameron from Northam Realty Advisors provided space for the banding to take place and who take an active interest in the peregrine pair and their growing family at Canada Square. Mark Heaton from Ministry of Natural Resources was responsible for banding the peregrines and another person from a different department in MNR also in attendance. The intrepid Steve, from Solar Window Cleaning, who was responsible for extracting the young from their nest ledge. He worked solo this year, his third on the ledge!! One hand on the rope as the other fended off the attacks of an irate Haven and Stormin who dived on him incessantly. This year Steve only donned a *hoodie* as part of his defence – no helmet!! Mark and Marion Nash, from The Canadian Peregrine Foundation, organised the banding. Bruce, from Paragon Security, let us into the building. As spectators there were more people from Northam Realty and a couple of CPF volunteers, Zoe and Lyn. Haven and Stormin produced three youngsters again. This year the mix is two females and one male. Haven provided a pigeon for their breakfast this morning and Stormin apparently provide some desiccated *piece of something* as an intended snack later on. The young were extracted and replaced without incident and Steve, although subject to many *near misses*, came away unscathed. We have the young male named Ramjet, black band, number W over 65 and white tape. One female named Tinia, black band, number Y over 67 and red tape. The second female, Imagine, black band, number Y over 68 and blue tape. After the banding I went to my usual perch from which I observe the nest. Haven sat on that ledge for two hours watching her brood. I went to the bank and when I came out Haven had left. All three are very healthy young peregrines. In a few short weeks we will once again begin the fledge watch as the youngsters take to the air. Lyn Photos to come
Ramjet as in Roger Ramjet??

Canada Square Update on the Kids June 14, 2013 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Tracy Simpson Reports:
I was out at 3:30 pm today and saw a bit more action than before. Haven was on the wall north of the nest looking down on her charges on Canada Square. I saw a little head pop up, then down, then up again. Stormin flew in from the west and went directly to last year’s scrape ledge where he chupped, had a scratch, spent some time at the back and finally on the edge, in the shade out of the sun. In addition to the head I saw a wing pop up and flap then disappear. The little head watched in astonishment! Stormin flew to Rio-Can and perched whilst Haven spread herself out on that wall with wings hanging over both edges! Shortly thereafter Haven flew to the mast atop 2180 Yonge St, followed by Stormin. They flew together and back over Canada Square where they perched temporarily on the tall mast on that roof. Haven flew to Rio-Can and perched and about a minute later Stormin flew from the mast, chupping madly as he made his way west, over the crane further down Duplex Ave and was gone. Five minutes later Stormin was back on RC on the south west corner. He flew off and back a couple of times and then was gone. Haven too had left her perch. Roughly 5minutes late someone did a *flyover* the nest and headed east. A couple of minutes after that Haven flew onto the north side of the tall condo, followed by Stormin. They were there for all of two minutes when Haven was off again! She flew to the west side of the condo, appeared to brush one of the windows, flew behind the condo and then north up Yonge St. Haven was gone for ten minutes and returned to her perch above the scrape. I wonder if she was trying to get Stormin to hunt ? Stormin had followed her to the east side of the condo and disappeared. Fifteen minutes after his departure he was back on RC three floors from the top. Barely two minutes after his return I spotted three Turkey Vultures east of the tall condo, making lazy circles. They were circling upward until I guess they found the breeze they needed to take them south west. As they emerged over the tall condo Stormin woke up and gave an alarm call. I looked at Haven who appeared unconcerned and continued her preening. The turkey vultures disappeared. The wind was at two levels and blowing in absolute opposite directions. I know this because there were two levels of cloud moving in the exact opposite direction! A few minutes later a fuzzy head popped up followed by a second one. The first fuzzy head stepped onto the edge and I could see a patch of fuzz amid the *Big bird* dark feathers on its rump. There were bits of fuzz on the wings and the head and then of course those delightful little *peregrine plus-fours* in fluff - the legs. One of the youngsters was exercising his/her wings by stretching and flapping - then was still. Haven found a stash on the ledge next to last year’s scrape and plucked feathers from it and had a bite to eat. As Haven chupped and flew towards the nest Stormin also took flight and homed in on a *kamikaze* pigeon so I missed whether Haven had a food parcel and took it to her young. Stormin dived on the pigeon which nearly had a heart attack as it jinked and dived down the side of the black building and onto a ledge there. Storming tried twice to get onto the ledge but eventually flew to the top of that building and looked down. Five minutes later he flew over Canada Square and then onto the big mast atop that building where he perched for a mere two minutes. He launched into flight and immediately went into a stoop over Eglinton Ave and the corner, which is now blocked off for construction. He was so low he just scooped over the scaffolding, did a fast turn and came back over Eglinton Ave with a bird in his talons. It was not a pigeon but may have been a sparrow as there are plenty around there. He landed on the NW corner of the black building where he plucked the feathers off. Seven minutes later Stormin flew over my head with the food parcel and disappeared northwest of me. It was simply to gain height, as a minute later he was back and flying onto the ledge. His offspring mobbed him and took the food to the back of the ledge out of my sight. He remained on the edge for a minute before flying off to a perch on RC. Haven was back on her wall above the ledge and that is where I left them all. As I was walking to the bank Haven flew to the second ledge south of the concrete wall. She must have left the food there when she flew off earlier. So, today, it was Stormin who brought in food for the youngsters.

A new lesson learned June 29, 2013 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton Marion Nash Reports:
Spent two hours waiting for and then watching the peregrines.
One of the femasles flew onto the crane down Duplex Ave so they are starting to spread out farther.
Haven did an in-air transfer of a pigeon (???) to Imagine. I did not get band colour and I am going only by size. Imagine is a very large female! Imagine flew to the Canada Square roof, south end and barely made it but did not let go of the food parcel !!
Cheers Lyn

Youngsters try to get their own food July 15, 2013 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton Marion Nash Reports:
Saw all five peregrines this evening. Haven, Stormin and one juvenile female were really high east of Young and Eglinton intersection, at the same that I saw Ramjet and the other juvenile female talon-touching just above Rio-Can. The three high peregrines were also talon-touching.
Just a wee while later one of the juveniles was fed and the other two descended on the same spot but without luck.
One of the juveniles became annoyed at having to sit and watch the other one eat and so it took off and chased a pigeon over the bus bay and across the Young and Eglinton intersection east towards the Bell Canada building. Sad to say the pigeon was faster than the peregrine, who gave up the chase. Lyn

!!! Juvenile still on site September 05, 2013 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton
Marion Nash Reports:
I was out on Thursday 5th September and as always glanced up at the Rio-Can building and found a large *lump* on one of the uprights on the top floor west end of the building. I had no binoculars with me but had a suspicion it was one of the juvenile females. I finally walked to a spot from which I could see her chest and it was definitely a juvie female. Not sure which one. Anyway she flew away and I was on my way home when she re-appeared much lower down on the building. I was on the north side of Eglinton and almost under her and I waited and watched. Wily bird! She flew south along the west side of Canada Square and around the south end to Yonge Street. I waited and sure enough she flushed the pigeon flock from the building south of the CIBC building and chased them across the intersection. The pigeons at the intersection have learnt their lessons well and now fly quite low to avoid becoming peregrine dinners!
She flew back onto the Rio Can building and sat for a bit then chased another pigeon in front of the building towards Duplex Ave but went over the roof of the gold building on the corner and disappeared from view. At the same another peregrine came from the east, struggling against the wind and perched on Rio-Can. I am not sure whether this was the adult male or the juvie male. From what I could see I think juvie male but am open to correction.
At least one juvie still in the area. I am wondering if this might be Imagine as she was the largest at banding time.

4 eggs for Canada Square Pair April 11, 2014 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton Marion Nash Reports:
Haven & Stormin have 4 eggs as of April 11th.
Dad doing some incubation duties today. April 21, 2014 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton Marion Nash Reports:
went out today and spent 2 hours observing. Nothing much happened.
Haven was on the south face of Rio-Can most of the time. The first time she flew it was south on the west side of Canada Square, across the south end of the building and then she emerged flying east along Eglinton before turning around and coming back towards Rio-Can. She flew north and disappeared only to show up over Rio-Can and the Eglinton/Duplex intersection. She disappeared again for a while and then flew back to Rio-can from over 53 Division. She perched for a while and preened and stretched often before flying again and she did not re-appear before I left. I did not see Stormin at all.
Cheers

!!! Another day to remember. Some sad news and some good news! June 22, 2014 - Toronto - Don Mills Mark Nash Reports:
June 22rnd - 2014 Just when you though it was safe to come out of the house!! Well, during the fledge watch times, its usually not!
My day started teamed up Marion down at the Canada Square fledge watch to fill in for Lyn while she attended to other commitments. Remembering that both Marion and Lyn have been typically doing the entire Canada Square fledge watch by themselves over the years, spending 12 to 16 hours a day in the streets, 7 days a week all by themselves for the most parts. There was no way that Marion could deal with this situation by herself this morning with two of the three young hatchlings revved up and ready to go.
We set up at the usual place on Duplex street just south of Eglinton down the street form the Metro police station where Marion and Lyn usually man the fledge watch. Finding parking is always a challenge (and very costly) and its always both a very frustrating time consuming stressful experience.
Oh god, I don’t how Marion and Lyn have been dealing with this fledge watch alone all of these years, as it became very evident as to how lucky I have been on fledge watches in suburbia!!! I have to admit, the stress was almost overwhelming, with the traffic, smog, volume of people, and the noise!!! The diesel fumes and exhausts coming out of the busses constantly coming and going from the bus terminal across the street was terrible!
The stress was all compounded by the fact that when we arrived, one young hatchling has already fledged - (and already missing), and the second chick took its first flight only minutes after we got set up!!
By the time Lyn arrived, I must admit, my nerves were fried, I was soaked with perspiration after doing 3 - 2 kms - 10 block radius walk-arounds while trying to avoid all of the traffic and volume of people while searching for one of the missing fledglings.
This was again further compounded as I was absolutely horrified to see their resident adult female hunting pigeons a waist level in the centre of all this congestion right in the middle of Yonge Street as she weaved in and out of traffic chasing pigeons. On two occasions, I thought she was going to fly right into pedestrians walking on the side walks as she chased three groups of pigeons!!!

Canada Square update 20140623 June 23, 2014 - Toronto - Canada Square Building - Yonge and Eglinton Marion Nash Reports:
Marion and I worked hard this morning trying to figure out where our missing bird might be. We racked our brains and pounded pavements and came up wanting ! Now this is where 17 years of Marion`s experience comes into play!
We had noted that both Haven and Malik were in the area and never flying far from Canada Square unless on a hunt. Marion said that Haven was not too far away and that meant she knew where the *missing* peregrine was and she was not concerned OR she did not know and was just waiting for him to show up after his adventure! So we decided to cool our jets a while and wait. Haven and Malik had done a number of *fly-overs and fly-bys*`and we had two youngsters in view; one fledgling and Chinook still on the ledge. The fledgling on the southwest corner of Canada Square was either tucking into what was left of his last meal or he had been fed .
At 2:22pm we had a fledgling fly from the roof of Canada Square to the north west corner of Rio-Can and then back across the top of Canada Square and way up to the top of the short condo across Yonge street. An epic flight! We had the thought that this youngster was Linden because he maintained his height and climbed and made such a long flight!! We had three young peregrines again!
Marion noticed a window washer preparing to wash the windows on that southern condo. Haven also noticed the activity and went and sat on the railing on the second condo down extreme right. When the window washers launched himself over the edge in a bosun`s chair Haven flew to the railing around the antenna on 2180 Yonge. She watched the progress of the window washer as he made his way DOWN.
Late in the afternoon Linden flew to the roof of Canada Square and a while later he appeared on the same corner as his brother and Marion also managed to get colour from the band on the one who had stayed on that ledge – red for Equinox. This confirmed that our little flyer was indeed Linden. One of the youngsters on the south west corner disappeared and we found a youngster down on the balcony wall! We were not able to see Chinook on the *porch* but could not at that point work out who it was on the balcony. Pieces fell into place when we saw TWO youngsters on the south west corner *porch* level AND one youngster at the north west balcony corner. Once again Marion`s experience and knowledge came to the for and it was explained to me that Chinook must have made a *mini* fledge by flying of his *porch* and immediately hooking back whence he had come but a floor lower and ended up on the balcony wall. He afforded us much entertainment with his running along the wall and jumping to the floor and then appearing back on the wall elsewhere. He appeared to be having such fun. Out of the *playpen* into the big wide world of a huge balcony and obstacle course.
Equinox flew over to the top of 2180, north west corner, making a perfect *J-up* landing. *J-up* is how an adult lands on a ledge. They dip down below the ledge and then fly up and land and the action looks just like the letter *J*. Haven flew over and sat on the railing below him. Then we noticed two heads over there. Haven took food in to one of them. Then the rain came and Haven tried to get those two to fly back to Canada Square but they had other ideas and sat it out. When the rain stopped they flew back to Canada Square at different times. Chinook continued to entertain himself, and us, throughout all the rain. Just before we left there was one more epic flight and again we assume it was Linden. He came off the roof of Canada Square, flew to Rio-Can, bumped a window and fluttered a floor or two before recovering and flying around the corner to the top of the apartment building. We left him there.

This news belongs here and at Central Terminal Buffalo, but posting here to refresh it.
As we have heard, Stormin' is now on site at the 18 King St. scrape with Erin. Time will tell if Erin is up for another season...
Meanwhile, Stormin' & Haven's son Simcoe (2012) was last seen nesting at the Oshawa Hospital with Alfrieda, daughter of Diamante & Glieg (2012) with one offspring, Salveo. Presuming the pair has not changed this year...

!!! Oshawa Lake Ridge Hospital peregrines are on site and getting ready to lay eggs! March 26, 2015 - Oshawa - Oshawa Activity Mark Nash Reports:
March 26th - 2015 A quickly update on the Oshawa Lake Ridge Hospital peregrines. I was able to spend several hours today out in Oshawa after delivering the new nest box that the CPF has build for them to provide a more suitable nesting habitat for their resident peregrines. I was delighted to catch both peregrines in view, and managed to snap a few photos of the “love-birds” while they were involved in some intimate mating activity. Wow, that doesn’t sound good! Just lucky to be there and have the camera in hand when the “love-birds” were involved with one another. That sounds a little better.
It would appear that the pair have decided to utilize a lower roof top elevation to lay their eggs at, in comparison to the higher roof top elevation that they used last season.
Actually, this lower elevation appears to be a better choice, given that it also has protection from both sides as well as a back wall to protect them from any driving winds and rain. While I don’t see this elevation any more challenging to install the nest box on, it remains to be seen when the time comes.
While we have no confirmation of any eggs having been laid as yet, given the both birds were visible at the same time for over an hour, and copulation was observed, it is not likely given these events (and in consideration of the cold temps) that they have not laid any eggs as yet,,,,,, (and obviously not involved in any sort of incubation),,, BUT copulation is happening, and egg(s) are very soon to follow!!!
I have attached some photos, (not very good ones) as it was still spitting rain, somewhat misty and still quite breezy and cold! So there lies my excuse (reason) for such crappy photos! Hmmm, maybe I Just can’t admit to being a crappy photographer.
Stay tuned,,,, as there is more update to follow………….

That looks like a very well-built nestbox, but my concerns arise as to if they will take out the kids for banding from the back or if that roof tips up and goes over the front. RRP has started with a couple that roof tips up and down over the front so they can lift the kids out without them going down accidentally at a site where it is bad to reach in from the front. If the back opens to get them out, they could go right out the front and not be able to fly.
It is good to see a solid floor between the box front and perch after incidents I've seen where a kid has fallen in between and couldn't "hang on" and fallen.

From CPF's Facebook - Stormin's son Quinn:
Quinn In Rehab
On August 20th, Rochester Animal services picked a young peregrine falcon and brought it to a local vet/rehabilitator. The rehab facility has contacted me and provided me with the auxiliary band number (Black Band D/62). They tried to report the band, but have not received a response, but based on the information on your site, I believe this may be one of the young from the Sheraton Centre (Quinn).
Based on the X-rays, there didn’t appear to be any broken bones, just some bruising. The falcon seems to be doing very well, both eating and flying. It is being transferred to a facility with a larger flight facility so that it can strengthen its flight and be tested for release. If all goes well, it should be released relatively soon. I will let you know how it goes.
Cheers, Jenny

Stormin and Chaos have 4 babies this year! Stormin was positively ID'd today and you can see photos of him, Chaos and the kids of CPF's FB page!
Two bandings today - this morning was at Toronto /Sheraton Centre...
Welcome Timbit(male, 615g, 26 days old, banded 02/AW, Blue tape), Vimny(male, 630g, 26 days old, banded 05/AW, white tape), Epione(female, 875g, 25 days old, banded Z/37, Red tape) and Marriott(male, 610g, 26 days old, banded 06/AW, yellow tape)!
Congrats to Mum(unbanded) and Dad... Stormin! Yes, Toronto's long time resident, is calling Sheraton home this year, and he's looking good too🙂. A very cute, fiesty bunch of chicks and a fierce couple of parents here. We would like to thank all involved to help accommodate "our special needs" during this unusual times of social distancing.
