Title: Beauty Found Injured - Downtown Rochester (2/10/12)
Post by: Yarak on 10-Feb-12, 05:30:32 PM
We are sorry to report that Beauty, the resident female nesting on the Times Square Bldg in Downtown Rochester, was found on the ground near the Xerox Tower. She was taken to a local rehabber, where she is being checked over and will receive the care she needs. The DEC has been notified as well...

I am so upset right now. Wondering why she has not been to Mercury the past few days. Was it a battle, was she chasing her prey? So many questions, so many prayers for our girl. Bless you Beauty, heal and come back to us! :crying: Was that Beauty Carol saw yesterday, who knows.

I saw this yesterday on the streaming video page. I looked through the still archive & didn't see her. Could have been a quick stop on Mercury. I'm leaving a message there.

What about this crow scaring program that just started? Was it near Beauty's nestbox or in her territory at all?.

I thought the same thing when the snowy owl was found! There is more than just crows out there!! I agree and I can tell you for certain that pefas get nervous around loud noises like that. Every year here they hold an air show with those fighter jets and their practice area runs right over my nest site and every year I see Jack and Angel huddled together on a back ledge they don't usually frequent when the jets come over. You can see by their posture and behavior that it disturbs them.

OK-not speculating-not commenting-just providing a picture for the question. Beauty's usual night time roost is on the Xerox Building, center of the map. That's where she was found. If I recall correctly, one major crow roost is in Manhattan Square Park. Times Square is the marker on the left with the bird on it.

We have to remember, Beauty was near all the Fireworks not too long ago and on the 4th of July, so she was pretty used to loud noises. Who knows what happened to her. It's just a shame.

According to the reports they were starting around Mt. Hope Ave (south-south west from Times Square). All the pictures & videos I'm seeing are from the Corn Hill area with the bridge we see from cam 1 in the background and OCS, Bausch & Lomb and other downtown buildings just behind that.

I can say that CarolP believes Tuesday was the last time she believes she saw Beauty for sure. She along with Dana,Joyce and KathyO are at my house right now. Beauty is now and will be in good hands. It is thought that there was a territorial battle at some point which led to Beautys' injuries. That's all I can say at this time. There will probably not be any more news until next week when the DEC or June Summers gives us an update. I don't believe the crow business has anything to do with it.I have a candle lit by a framed picture of the Beautyful one. Please pray for her everyone!

This evening, Kathy O, Dana, Joyce and I had dinner with MAK and spent time comforting each other and talking about what we had seen since last weekend, when a pair of Peregrines came into Rochester, Beauty's territory. We know that Beauty did what any female falcon would do, she defended her territory and her nest site. The cameras showed us Beauty at the nest box, which was unusual for her at this time of year. Watchers did witness some aggression between Beauty and the female of the pair.
After Sunday, Beauty did not appear on camera and we started to worry. She was seen most mornings sitting on the Mercury statue. Where was she?
Starting on Monday, I stopped after work to check the downtown area. I saw nothing on Monday. Tuesday, I stayed until after dark and finally found a Peregrine sitting on the south side of the old Changing Scenes Restaurant. I got the scope out and tried to get a good look at this falcon. I do believe this was Beauty. After 10 minutes, she took off heading east, towards Midtown. I looked for her and could not find her. There was no vocalization and she flew strong.
Wednesday, I checked downtown and the surrounding area for close to two hours. I drove slowly with my windows down listening and checking as much ground area as I could. Brian H had done this the day before (Tuesday) on foot. Neither of us had any luck finding her.
Thursday, I arrived downtown on the Broad St Bridge around 3:50 pm. For two hours, I watched a female falcon hunt the pigeons over the river on either side of the bridge. She landed in places that Beauty either never landed on or seldom did. She seemed to be lighter than Beauty and my gut said, this was not Beauty, but I couldn't be sure. I was never able to get a good look to see if this bird was banded. I posted my picture album showing all the different places she landed.
Friday. Late afternoon, Beauty was positively ID'd as the injured falcon picked up and brought in to a local rehabber.
I just wanted to share what I saw during the week. Get well soon Beauty. We all miss you.

Thank you for the information, Carol P. Hoping for a good update tomorrow.
Yes, hoping for good news on Monday morning! Keeping all my talons crossed for our Beauty. Is she still at Eastridge or did she go to rehabber from there? (Someone on Rachel Barnhart's blog posted that Beauty had been brought into Eastridge and the Dr. B. was first caretaker).

Do other raptors fight to the death like peregrines? This has been bothering me for quite some time now. Most of the back yard birds I'm familiar with usually settle their battles before any serious injury occurs. How will the peregrine population ever increase if one simply replaces another through serious injury or death? Perhaps this is happening because of so many nests in cities?? Sometimes it almost seems as if peregrines are determined to keep their population low. It's extremely frustrating to watch. I sure hope someone can post some good information on this subject for me to read.

Good questions Dot and hope we get some good answers. The Canadian falcons seem to get along, know their boundaries. Unity went way off her boundary. Maybe some are more aggressive? I can't imagine the pigeon supply dropping at Kodak Park, so what made her come to Beauty's territory?

I don't know Rochester as a city at all but just an educated guess, it's about location and reproduction. From what I've read here over the years, Beauty had the better (in a falcon's view) territory in terms of available places to nest and hunting grounds. The failed nest likely added to that desire to ensure a successful nest this year - better location and not having to share Archer would improve those odds.
My site here with Jack, who has 2 sites and 2 females works for a number of reasons. Both females are older, were already in established territories and had raised young successfully at their respective sites. Both sites are equally good - both have alot of areas where they can safely and successfully nest, lots of good hunting close by and more importantly Jack feeds and incubates at both sites and he's now fledged offspring at both sites so the females are both happy. My understanding is - and Tracy/Frank can correct me if I'm wrong but I was told - that Windwhistler when he did run two sites, in the last year two of the eyases died because he didn't supply Wind with food and she eventually had enough and drove him out. Both Archer's sites failed last year - so two unhappy females, one is bound to see the other as part of the problem. Not a personal thing but simply a matter of how to ensure I do what I'm hardwired to do - which is reproduce and ensure the continuation of my line.
Gord Brandt, a famed falcon Biologist out in Alberta has written some interesting articles, his last one discussed 'locations' and he mentioned how one of the tiercel's there has worked his way up through the available nest sites. Even though he had some success at the say 'less than desirable' sites with a mate, he has made a play for a better site twice - last year taking out his brother at the second best site in the city of Edmonton. So each time he's moved to a better location.

Although it seems that Peregrines in Canada are well behaved they actually are not. In 2011, we had 4 adult changeovers in southern Ontario. McKenzie replaced Sir Adam at the Burlington Lift Bridge, Stormin replaced Irving at Canada Square, Marla's mate at Nanticoke was run off altogether and she had to raise her three chicks alone and Infinity, after reclaiming her territory from the rogue, has since been replaced by that same rogue in Mississauga. We have quite the battles up here as well. In 2008, O'Connor took Juliet to the ground in front of the William Osler Hospital and the two just went at it. Trust me, the peregrines up here are not as well mannered as they appear.
They way I feel about it is that it never gets any easier from a watchers standpoint as we see the birds we come to know and love get into it with others. From a biological perspective, the strongest will prevail and pass on their genes creating a stronger population overall. With a finite number of available nesting territories, spats are due to happen. From a falcon watchers perspective, genetics be damned cause its always sad to lose one. Beauty is a really tough cookie and the fact that she's made it through the weekend is a really good sign. Our good thoughts go out to her from across the pond and we hope that her recovery is a speedy one.

Absolutely true Carly. The birds are driven to reproduce and will seek out the best site and the best mate with the best of everything. They'll fight to get it and fight to keep it as the biological drive to have young is undeniable. The best equals success, so to speak. It sure doesn't make me feel any better when they get into it, knowing that they essentially can't deny themselves as they are so driven to reproduce.

Carly, I believe you intended to refer to biologist Gordon Court in Alberta. He has worked with peregrines for many years, and is extremely knowledgeable. He has rescued and cared for many peregrines. As others have mentioned, Canadian peregrines are no less aggressive than their counterparts farther south. Here in Alberta, there have been many territorial battles, several of them fatal. Here is a link to an article by Gordon Court about one injured peregrine: http://www.ab-conservation.com/go/default/index.cfm/publications/conservation-magazine/online-version/2011-spring-summer/peregrine-repair/ (http://www.ab-conservation.com/go/default/index.cfm/publications/conservation-magazine/online-version/2011-spring-summer/peregrine-repair/) And an article on just one of the many territorial battles which have taken place in Alberta: http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/news/story.html?id=58c316e0-6a89-47a8-a6a9-392981a8cc40&k=58457 (http://www.canada.com/edmontonjournal/news/story.html?id=58c316e0-6a89-47a8-a6a9-392981a8cc40&k=58457)

Today I received a message from a concerned citizen, I am not saying who but this person brought up some good questions that maybe someone can or try to answer. Thank you!
I am confused about the idea that Beauty was fought by Unity. Did anyone see the fight? Are her wounds consistent with a fight? How is it that Beauty nearly killed Mariah and beat her up badly and yet this experienced fighter loses to a bird nearly her same age. Is Unity showing any signs of the fight? Is it possible Beauty fought with owl or eagle rather than Unity? Was there any reports of Beauty showing signs of her fight with Mariah back 3 years ago? I am really finding it hard to believe Unity and Beauty fought.
Any takers?

They can likely tell by the nature of her injuries, size of any lacerations, puncture wounds, etc.. Given that another female was seen right away in the territory tends to lean credence to the watchers conclusions and given the history between Beauty and Unity already I'd say it's plausible.
Keep in mind, not all battles are seen. Some are over quickly and others take place very high up or out of view and we don't find out until we hear an injured or deceased bird has been found.

Remember when Yankee took over the University of Buffalo nest from the first male, Smoky? I think this is Smoky trying to regain his nest when there were already three eggs laid. (Yankee & BB) BB came back and tried to protect her eggs but one broke in half. BB at far left Shortly after the fight at UB, we saw a tiercel we think was Smoky attempt to engage the male, Stash, at Central Terminal but he screeched from the perch and Stella came out of the nest box and together the scared away the intruder.

Did anyone see the fight? - Last Sunday Brian H witnessed aggression between Beauty and another female Peregrine Falcon. I have not heard that anyone witnessed a fight on Friday, the day Beauty was found on the ground. Are her wounds consistent with a fight? - No one, except the vet and rehabber, have examined her wounds, so I cannot answer that one. How is it that Beauty nearly killed Mariah and beat her up badly and yet this experienced fighter loses to a bird nearly her same age? - When Beauty fought Mariah, she had help from Archer. The day Brian H and I found her, both Beauty and Archer were attacking her. Every time Mariah tried to fly away, they knocked her down, until we were able to rescue her. Is Unity showing any signs of the fight? I watched her very closely through the scope while she ate on the roof on Saturday. I could see no outward evidence of any injuries, but that doesn't mean there aren't any hidden injuries beneath her feathers. She seems to be ok. Is it possible Beauty fought with owl or eagle rather than Unity? - Anything is possible, but we know that Brian H witnessed her fighting with another female the weekend before and now there is a new female on territory. Was there any reports of Beauty showing signs of her fight with Mariah back 3 years ago? - No, Beauty did not appear to be injured at that time. But again, it is impossible to see injuries covered by their feathers. I am really finding it hard to believe Unity and Beauty fought. - Although we cannot be 100% sure (until we positively ID this bird) that Unity is the new female downtown, we know for sure that both Beauty and Unity were seen fighting on the Kodak Tower last year. A security guard was able to get some pretty intense pictures of the fight. Also, Kathy O and I saw Beauty at Kodak Park with Archer, checking out the nest site. Thankfully Unity was not there at the time. So they were definitely aware of each other. These are all very good questions. To whoever asked these questions through Donna, thanks. It really helps to piece together what happened leading up to Beauty's going to rehab. It helps to understand what may have happened.

Yes, I tend to agree! He cut June off every time she tried to answer. I wanted her to finish the 1st question and he ran right into another... UGH

He is rude and crude and vulgar to most people he talks to (and I don't hear his show all that much...thank goodness). If that is his idea of humor....he caters to the lowest common denominator. I caught it a few times when Rachel Barnhart hosted; too bad she was not on with June today!

Our thanks to Barbara Loucks of the NYS DEC for this update on Beauty's condition. "Based on a conversation I had with the vet staff this morning. The bird is doing fine, eating well on day old chicks, pheasants, etc. X-Rays revealed no apparent fractures. The bird is holding the wing that was drooping fine...

Interesting use of words: "it" in lieu of "her", "the bird" and not "falcon" - found the report to be very clinical and impersonal. Just my impression and observation.

Thats what it was, a medical update. Professionals arent attached like folks who watch the falcons hatched and raised. To do anything else would make them go mad Id think, given their chosen profession.

Well, falcon life in Rochester is never boring -- but it is a bit hard on the blood pressure some days. My prayers for Beauty that she makes a full recovery, but if she must be an educational bird, at least she will still be with us. We've lost too many recently and it can't help but break your heart.
The good news is that I don't think there are more dedicated people anywhere than you all in Rochester -- few towns (and for that matter, few peregrines) are lucky enough to have so many people caring about them. Blessings to you all!
Vandrefalk P.S. Couldn't figure out how to light a candle? And, if the fight was with Unity, maybe she was tired of being the other woman. . . . .

Can the powers that be maybe put a link in the shout box that would take you to the latest. Nothing on imprints nothing here. Just saying I do not have time to go looking. :(
Funny never thought I'd warm up to Beauty after what happened with Mariah but all it took were two little eyases and that girl has a talon in my heart.

Beauty -some good news tonight from DEC. Even better is that tomorrow it's been one week since you were found by some good samaritan. (Thank you). We celebrate and light candles in your honor, Beauty. We are talking about memories tonight... I see you flying around and having a good time last winter with your gentleman caller, Mr. T. You were quite a little flirt. I see you being the good first time mom to Callidora and Jemison. You had to teach Archer, the clueless , a thing or two! I see you on Mercury - the money bag and the foot! I think those are your two favorite spots! And MAK took lots of great pics of you on Mercury. I hope to see you again on Mercury. I see you bathing in the river in a pic that Carol took. It was hot, and you were having a good time. Most of all, I see you sitting on those eggs last spring when it was so cold, and so wet, and you protected those eggs with all of your might. I see you sitting and looking toward the KP site. Wisdom in those eyes. Those are the "Kodak" moments that I have of you Continue to be strong in your peregrine ways, Beauty.

From Kate St John on her blog
This news is a week old but I missed telling it while I was away in Florida.
Peregrine falcons are jousting for territory now that nesting season is only a month away. On February 10 Rochester, New York falcon watchers reported that Beauty, the queen of the Times Square nest, was found injured on the ground near the Xerox Tower. She’d been in a fight.
Beauty was taken to a rehabber and is undergoing treatment. By now her wing no longer droops and the vet has confirmed that the vision in her injured eye is OK. She just needs time to heal.
Meanwhile, Rochester falcon watchers are trying to determine who won the site from Beauty. The new female is banded black-over-red with the same red “H” as Unity, a female who attempted to nest four miles away at Kodak Park.
If the new female is Unity, it would be a twist in the saga of Dorothy’s offspring. Beauty is Dorothy’s daughter, hatched at the Cathedral of Learning in 2007. Unity is Dorothy’s grand-daughter from Toledo, Ohio, making her Beauty’s niece. Both of them mated last spring with Archer, Rochester’s resident male peregrine, but neither nest was successful.
Eventually someone will identify the new female peregrine at the Times Square Building. Only then will we learn if this is another chapter in Peyton Place for Dorothy’s girls.

Is there any more news about Beauty? What will happen if Beauty is releasable? Will she be released in Rochester? Even if she is released somewhere else as Mariah was, she will be back here within days as Mariah was. Then what?

Margaret, I don't think anyone can answer your questions just yet. Beauty is suppose to have her blood work done today. After the results, maybe we will have more news on her. Just have to cross our fingers and hope for the best, for all the Peregrines involved. It's going to be interesting. Wish they would argue then leave unscathed but that's not what they do. :(

What a great update! Thank you, Carol! And thank you for checking on the possibility of photos. Much as I would like to see her, I totally understand how important it is not to stress Beauty while she is recovering.
I am very concerned about what may happen when she is released. What other nest boxes are available which might be usable by one of the falcons? I am not sure what type of nest box, if any, Unity has had.

While there are a number of other boxes north of downtown, Unity did not choose one. She laid eggs on a metal sheet holding a chute away from a wall. It's full of stuff, much of which seems to be pigeon poop.

Bobbie just click on a unlit candle and click continue. Add a greeting in the top box, your initials or Bobbi in the second box under the greeting box, in the 3rd box below initials put RFC then "continue". On the next screen is a drop down box, find your country and click it. Under that box you can put Wicklow or keep it blank. Then put your name in the 3rd box on that page hit continue. On the next page is where you click the wick and it's lit. Then click continue, this is where you may exit as your candle is ready to go. You now have candles lit...

Shows how fast they burn out. THey were down to less than 180...I lit them back up to 185. They were almost at 250 this afternoon. Keep the candles burning, and the way home lit for Beauty. Keep her in our thoughts.
