Eyes to the Skies

Morning watch 10-7-13

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

I left the house with a temperature of 71 degrees (F) 22 (C) and humid overcast conditions. As I started down route 490 to my surprise the eastern sky was orange from the rising sun. I turned on my camera and tho it is out of focus from using one hand while driving I took a pic. Less than 2 minutes later as I approached the off ramp for Plymouth Ave. the eastern sky was dark.

So I made my way to the east side of downtown a little after 7am checking everything on the way as I always do and when I rounded the back (east side) of HSBC I was pleasantly surprised to find Beauty just off the northeast corner and Dot.Ca (DC) on the corner near her. I parked next to the post office on Ajax St. to observe our very together pair.

DC turned around in circles a couple times before settling down. Neither one of them were doing much-looking around the area and at each other. I stayed with them about 45 minutes and left to check the Brighton Site (BS) as the dark clouds took over the downtown sky.

Arriving at BS around 8am I spotted a falcon on the northwest corner of the northwest extension back in on the roof a bit. As I got closer I couldn’t see it so I continued on to see if there was another PEFA on the premises. There was indeed perched on the southeast corner of the southwest extension an unbanded tiercel we are calling UT . I assumed Pigott was on the north side as I pulled over to watch UT-he had his back to me facing toward Pigott. They could see each other but I couldn’t see her from my position.

UT was mainly watching Miss Pigott and the territory-I drove around to the north side of the site to see if she was still up there. I had to park out near the front drive to get back far enough to see her as she was eating her breakfast.

I went back to UT after 10 minutes parking on the east side further than I was before to get a side view of him. Larry stopped by for a quick hello 0n the way to work pulling up next to me. 10 minutes later the cold front brought a hard rain to dump on us.

A couple minutes after the rain started Pigott flew above UT on her way to a west facing window on the top level of the southeast extension in the corner and sheltered from the weather. UT remained on his corner in the pouring rain.

I left them at 8:30am and returned to downtown checking HSBC first where I found the Beautyful one and DC still perched on the northeast corner in the driving rain and they were closer to each other than when I left them. I just love that they are spending so much time together in such close proximity.

I left them after a minute or so to go check out the Hawkeye and Seneca Towers locations. I had the same results as usual-nobody around so I ended my watch at 9:05am. I’m glad that Pigott has some company but I find it strange that DC hasn’t been to BS to kick out the male visitor. DC seems much more fixated with Beauty-possibly because they had the 3 offspring this year coupled with the fact that he and Pigott had a failed nest. This is all the more reason to continue monitoring our falcons since there is so much that remains a mystery about their behaviors. Anyway, I saw 4 Peregrine Falcons on my watch bringing a smile to my face despite the lousy weather! 🙂

This is truly a fascinating turn of events with Dot.ca staying close to Beauty in downtown, and UT getting acquainted with Pigott in Brighton. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next, and when/if DC and UT decide to migrate. Thanks for the update, MAK!

  2. Ginny Says:

This is getting interesting now. It seems perhaps DC is accepting of the fact Pigott has a visitor and maybe hopefully he will stay close to Beauty.
I just don’t want to see any fights!
    Thanks MAK! 🙂

  3. MAK Says:

You’re welcome Barb and Ginny! I think maybe DC didn’t know about UT or I’m sure he would have escorted him out of the territory. Perhaps he did today for UT wasn’t seen by watchers this afternoon or evening. 🙂

  4. Alison in Indiana Says:

Maybe DC’s attention to Pigott was bacause he had lured her down to Rochester and then could not provider her with the Times Square prime location. Now that P. has another fella, he can stick with the Queen of Midtown.

  5. bc Says:

Don’t forget he did lose downtown for a couple of days this summer. He might just be making sure Beauty knows he is a good mate.
