Peregrine's Future
|
Whether on or off the endangered species list, the Peregrine is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which prohibits the taking, killing, or possession of migratory birds and their eggs without the specific permission of the Department of the Interior. Peregrines are also protected by many state laws.
However, the menace of DDT still haunts the Peregrine. Even though many countries in South and Central America have banned the pesticide, its use still persists in parts of Latin America - the winter grounds of many Peregrines. Blood samples taken from Peregrines found in the southern part of the United States have shown traces of DDT, obviously built up during their stay in Latin America. Continuous vigilance is needed to protect Peregrines from the perils of a world still laced with DDT and other chemicals.
