Eyes to the Skies

Morning watch 4-8-14

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

The weather this morning was warm with a starting temperature of  43 (F) 6 (C) with overcast skies, windy conditions and rain in varying degrees on and off throughout

As I arrived on Broad St. at 6:35am I spotted Beauty and Dot.Ca (DC) on the base of Mercury so I pulled over by the Blue Cross Arena to watch. I got a couple pics before DC flew off with prey in his talons and took it to the north side of the deck. It had black wings and appeared to be the size of a Red-winged Blackbird tho I couldn’t say for sure if that’s what he had to offer Beauty.

I drove down to the hole after Beauty went to the nest box-she wasn’t interested in DC s’ food gift at first as I watched him fly out and back to the deck 3 times with it.

I went up on the Broad St. Bridge where I could see Beauty in the nest box.

Finally on the 4th try Beauty took the food as reported to me by Donna and Annette around 7am. Thank you! I missed that as I was looking other places for DC at the time. Beauty left the nest box and I caught up with her as I drove back down to the hole where I saw her fly from the southwest corner of the Wilder building with her food and go behind Widows Walk.

I went to Fitzhugh St. looking for her on the west side of Widows Walk but I believe she must have cached the food back there somewhere and left. As I approached on Broad St. I could see the Beautyful one on the base of Mercury-I then went down Bank Place and stopped where it meets Aqueduct St. in the hole to observe. Seconds later she raised her tail as DC came flying in to mate with her.

Beauty watched DC and then flew to the nest box (thanks Annette for letting me know) while the rain started to really come down, so I had to put my window up and missed her leave. I went around to my spot behind Keybank in the hole and at about 7:20am DC showed up on the northeast corner of the roof that is above the well.

I watched DC stay put in the rain and around 8am Annette tweeted that Beauty left the nest box-I missed her exit as I was focused on DC. Thanks again Annette! I left 5 minutes later to check the Brighton Site, hoping one of these days I’ll find Pigott there but not today-the juvie wasn’t there either. I spotted a Red-tailed Hawk on a light pole in my travels.

Once again, Annette (thanks) helped me out and  let me know Beauty was on the deck so when I arrived downtown I knew just where to look for her. Beauty was still there when I got there at 8:45am and DC was over on the top ibeam southeast side of OCSR. I went over to the Radisson Hotel to watch them.

I took a couple shots to show my view from the Radisson Hotel by Main St.

DC did some napping and preening until he spotted something down in the river and flew off into a stoop after it out of my field of vision.

I checked to see that Beauty was still on deck but DC didn’t resurface anywhere that I could see him. So I ended my watch at 9am after one more pic of Beauty.
