Weekend Falcon Watch Report – 4/12 and 4/13/2014
By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.
1 – 2 – 3 Eggs and counting! 🙂
Three eggs and temps close to 80 degrees today. Springtime in Rochester has arrived. Of course we won’t talk about later on this week when temperatures will drop again.
Saturday Afternoon – April 12, 2014
I didn’t have a whole lot of time. My time is very limited for falcon watching right now. But I get out when I can. My route took me to Lake Ave near the Kodak Park Research Labs first. While I was driving, heading south, I spotted an adult Peregrine Falcon flying overhead near the tall KP research lab building. I quickly pulled over into the bus lane and was able to get one picture. This is very close to the Seneca Tower Apartments (just across the river) where Dana has been seeing an adult falcon and where Billy had also been seen. I lost sight of the falcon as it headed east across the river gorge.

After checking the Seneca Towers Apts and Hawkeye and not finding any falcons, I headed towards downtown where I found fellow falcon watcher Dan S on the Broad St Bridge. We stayed there for about an hour before Dan had to leave. Beauty was on the nest box platform.

Rfalconcam Watcher Donna texted me to let me know that Dot.ca (DC) was inside the nest box on the eggs, two at that time. After Dan left, I moved down to Aqueduct St (aka the hole). Dot.ca flew out of the nest box and he was kakking loudly. From where I was parked, I could not see what DC was after, but I sure could hear him. Whatever was bothering DC, didn’t seem to bother Beauty. She continued to preen and look up now and then. After about 15 minutes, Dot.ca landed on top of the Mercury statue and Beauty walked into the nest box. Rfalconcam Watcher Camp verified that Beauty was in the nest box. Thanks Donna and Camp for your help yesterday.

While Dan and I were on the Broad St Bridge, we noticed that there was some scaffolding going up on the west end of Midtown Plaza. Looks like they’re going to start working on it soon.

I had to be somewhere at 4:30 pm, but checked the BS location afterwards. Sorry to say, I did not find any falcons there at 7:00 pm.
Sunday Early Afternoon, April 13, 2014
Today I started my watch at the BS location. I stayed there for close to an hour. Dana joined me there. Again no falcons seen or heard.
Dana and I joined Kathy O downtown on Aqueduct St (aka the hole). It was busy at the Blue Cross Arena again. A group of cheerleaders were practicing on the sidewalk on Broad St. Not sure what was going on there today.
Beauty was up on Camera #1 (pan cam) and Dot.ca was up above her on the northeast wing ledge of the Times Square Bldg (TSB).

Beauty took off and flew around a bit before landing on the nest box platform. She stayed there for awhile before heading into the nest box to sit on the eggs (now 3!).

Kathy left, leaving Dana and I to watch Dot.ca take off and head east across the river. While we were waiting for him to return, Kathy reported that she had been watching two Peregrine Falcons flying over the Kodak Park Research Labs. Dot.ca did not return, so Dana and I joined Kathy at KP on Lake Ave. By that time the falcons had left. Kathy said they both headed north east across the river gorge. This is the second day in a row that a falcon had been seen flying in this area and today there were two! Of course we’ll keep checking for these two falcons.
I’ll leave you with some non-falcon news about my neighborhood Red-tail Hawks (RTH). A couple years ago, they had lost their nest during a high wind storm. Well, they have rebuilt their nest in the same area on a taller tree. I checked out the nest and there was an RTH up there. I was really happy to see that they had returned and rebuilt their nest. 🙂

Goodnight everyone!

Oh boy, DC doesn’t return and then 2 seen flying over Kodak. Has Ms P found herself another nest somewhere? Perhaps Beauty doesn’t have all of his time as we had thought.
Once again, watch this space for the next chapter in the tale of the Rochester falcons, brought to you by our faithful watchers.
Thanks for all you do.

You’re very welcome Camp! Hope we’re able to ID the KP pair. : )
