Eyes to the Skies

Morning watch 6-22-14

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

A beautiful morning for a watch with a temperature of 56 (F) 13 (C) blue skies and sunshine

I joined Dan on the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) at 6am-Beauty was under the northeast wing and Dot.Ca (DC) was on the northwest wing ring of the Times Square building (TSB) with an eyas on the well wall parapet.

As Dan was telling me about the many unsuccessful stoops by Beauty and DC a new watcher, Louise joined us around 6:40am. DC flew across to the southwest wing ring a few minutes later and at 6:55am Beauty spread her wings turned around and slipped off the back of the ledge vanishing to the west.

At 7:05am DC flew over to the Mercury money bag (MMB). We looked at him for a few minutes and then Dan noticed Beauty on Mercurys’ heel. It never ceases to amaze me how these raptors can sneak in without being seen-I call it falcon games!

DC flew off going above our heads and circled out over the river while the Beautyful one flew off and landed on the base of Mercury DC ended up taking her place on the heel.

At 7:20am DC flew toward the hole and came back with a small package coming to rest on the base of Mercury with Beauty. He plucked some feathers then delivered it to the deck and left it for the kids to pick at on their own as he flew up to the column above the nest box to watch. Another new watcher, Judy joined the watch at this time. I believe it was Mercury on the wall at the time DC dropped off the food that ran and jumped up on the parapet and took the short flight over to the deck!

Beauty flew off Mercury going east across the river behind Chase, past Bausch& Lomb, then disappeared behind Xerox. Dan left and a few minutes later Larry and Harold (his dog) joined Louise, Judy and I on the BSB. Around 8:10am Beauty came flying in with food taking it to the deck to feed her kids and DC flew over to the 2nd ibeam west corner of OCSR.

Judy left and a few minutes later Louise was on her way as well. The boys were out on the well wall as Beauty finished off the leftovers on the deck with Nettie watching her.

Around 8:45am Beauty flew up to the north corner above the nest box then went behind TSB. One of the girls, I believe Tesh, went to the parapet on the well wall and back to the deck quickly. Soon after that DC showed up on the MMB and Beauty on the 2nd ibeam west corner of OCSR. Larry left just after Beauty flew over to cam 1 just before 9am. I went down to the hole for a close up look before ending my watch as well.

I will officially start fledge watch tomorrow morning knowing that things are going to amp up now with the soon to be fledglings getting ever so closer to their first flights. Keep smiling! 🙂

MAK, hope your going on fledge watch doesn’t mean the end of your informative and enjoyable blogs and outstanding photos and videos. This has been my first season of watching these amazing birds. Thanks for your great reportage. It has been fun … I know there’s more to come.

Fledging? These eyases still have way too much down on them…. Well, maybe it will blow away in the next day or two.
