Falcon Fledge Watch – Orville Fledges! – 8/18/12

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

As most of you have heard, our friend Orville has left the building and fledged, Orion Style!  Jeanne, Kathy O, MAK, Dana and I were on the Broad St Bridge (BSB) watching Orion at the nest box wrestling with something at the front edge of the nest box.  I kept saying!  It’s Orville!  He’s got Orville out there!  I started to walk towards the TSB but turned back when Orion took off, heading north.  By the time I made my way back to my fellow Watchers, we all received a tweet from Donna, “Orville’s gone!  Check the street!”  I immediately headed back towards the TSB, this time on a mission, find Orville!

I started my search on the sidewalk under the nest box, where I found 3 pieces of Orville scattered about.  Oh, poor Orville.  My search continued.  There had to be more.  Yep, out in the middle of the street, I found the largest piece of Orville, thankfully untouched by passing cars.  I made sure no cars were coming before I carefully went out into the road and scooped up the 4th and final piece of Orville.

Orville is currently in rehab and will be cared for, hopefully to return to the Rochester Falcons nest box high above the city, where he will continue to guard young eyases in the future.  🙁

Oh that poor little rock! 🙁 Nice rescue Carol!

  2. Kapi Reith Says:

How sad. Poor Orville. Wishing you a successful rehab.

  3. Helen P. Says:

Being an “only child” I think it’s sweet that Orion played with Orville! Hoping Orville’s rehab goes well!

  4. susan c Says:

Orville! get well soon, Carol will make sure that you do.

so are we Stone Watchers now, too? rescuing all (1) Orvilles in the Greater Rochester Area? 😉

  5. Carol P. Says:

There’s only one Orville Susan, and he’s kind of fallen to pieces. It is very interesting though that Orion seemed to consider this little white rock something to “play” with right from the start.

  6. patsy6 Says:

Get well soon, Orville! Orion didn’t mean it. He just doesn’t know that rocks can’t fly. I know you’ll be back to be a playmate to next year’s eyas(es).

  7. BC Says:

Get Well Orville. Yes I am sure Orion was up there yelling “flap flap come on you can do it” not realizing what he was doing to his little friend. I hope rehab goes well and we see you back in the nest box where you belong. Glad you were there to rescue him Carol.

This saga will have to be added to the Orville story.

  8. margaret Says:

The legend continues! If anyone is going to give Orville wings – it will be the Falcon Watchers!
Orville and Orion – connected from the beginning, and now connected by legend!

  9. Barb W in L.A. Says:

It certainly does seem that Orville meant something special to Orion. Once again, Carol P. to the rescue! I hope Orville makes a full recovery in rehab at “Wild Rocks.”

  10. carla Says:

It’s possibly the most exciting thing he ever experienced.Poor Orville, get wel soon !
Thanks to Carol and the Rock watchers.

  11. Braveheart2665 Says:

Oh my goodness, poor Orville, some serious fractures. I was watching Orion playing but couldn’t tell he had knocked Orville off, he sure was having fun though

  12. Donna M. in Atl. Bch Says:

Carol, on behalf of PEFA lurkers everywhere thank you for rescuing Orville. I like the idea, mentioned before of protyping the rehabbed Orville and selling the PEFA version of a pet rock. I know everyone would want their own Orville, something to hold on to while watching all the PEFA drama – a soothing stone, so to speak. I think since Orville had the name first initial as Orion that of course he believed to be his brother. With everything else that’s happened this year it wasn’t at all the unrealistic to think that Orville just might have been able to fly. Hope he’s his old self soon. Fladonna
PS Now we just have to have a name contributions for the product!

  13. Barb W in L.A. Says:

I agree that the Orville replicas would be big sellers. Absolutely, Donna M., during anxious Falcon Watching moments we could all use them as our “Worry Stones!”

  14. margaret Says:

I love, love, love these responses! So there needs to be a “Pet Orville” or “Worry Bead Orvile”

or “O and O’s” beads or something! Come on creative people who brought us Bricks for Chicks and

M and K ” m and m” ….this is a fundraiser right here! A tee shirt with the pivotal moment in pictures as Orion watches Orville go over the edge? The fractured Orville Carol found?

Actually, perhaps Orion and Orville are the gift of levity that we so needed this tough year.

  15. Alison Says:

Ah, Orville, who has accompanied the Rochester Falcons for generations! Did we first get to know him back in the days of Mariah and Cabot-Sirocco? Or did he first appear with Kaver? Who here remembers the continuing saga of Orville, which we recounted/invented to pass the time during the uneventful days of brooding? Everyone added a paragraph until we had no more ideas for the story line, then we had a hatch and there were new things to observe.
