Eyes to the Skies

Morning watch 5-6-13

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Todays starting temperature was 51 (F) 11 (C) with minimal wind, sunshine and blue skies.

I arrived downtown right around 5:30am and could see no falcons as I parked on Broad St. next to the Blue Cross Arena(BCA)-one of the only places available to park with the road closures around the Times Square building (TSB) for the Spiderman movie shoots. I was facing east so I could see the statue of Mercury and since Beauty wasn’t on the base I figured Dot.Ca hadn’t arrived yet to relieve her of incubation duties. I then drove around to Exchange Blvd. and parked in front of the main entrance to the BCA as I would be facing north and could see the nest box directly ahead of me. Around 5:45am I caught a glimpse of a set of wing tips on the deck so I figured DC had arrived and sure enough Beauty came flying out and over to the base of Mercury.

Beauty stayed only a minute or so then dropped off the back of the base out of view. I was on the Court St. bridge at the time but I had mistakenly tweeted I was on the Andrews St. Bridge which is where I wentΒ  next to look for the Beautyful one from the north side of the city. After unsuccessfully finding her I was off to the Brighton site. I arrived there about 6:15am and found the lovely Pigott on the west end of the south side vent.

Miss Pigott kept herself occupied watching the birds in the trees below and in the sky above her. She flew off after a starling and returned to the vent after missing.

A couple minutes later she flew out about 20 feet and aborted her attempt on a starling and returned to the vent again.

Pigott flew off one more time a few minutes later headed south and out of view and this time she would not return.

I returned to downtown around 7:30am and parked on the Court St. Bridge where I was able to see Beauty on the base of Mercury.

She flew offΒ  as soon as I stopped and got out the car going over to the nest box to relieve DC. He flew over to the Mercury money bag.

While I was recording a video of the river DC left the money bag so I had no idea which direction he went. I decided to go to the Andrews St. bridge to check the north side of things but never did find him. The traffic was just horrendous trying to get from one place to another because of all the road closures for the Spiderman movie. I got really frustrated with it all so I ended my watch at just about 8am. I saw all 3 Rochester Peregrine Falcons so I did manage to smile about that as I left the city!Β  πŸ™‚

And we SOOO appreciate you enduring the frustrations!

  2. campgee Says:

It’s not fun having the city in this situation I’m sure. Glad your on the job no matter what the circumstances though, shows just how dedicated you are and we so appreciate what you do letting us know the birds are all doing well, eating and flying out to the beautiful skies of late.

Good job MAK, your such a trooper.

  3. MAK Says:

I was no trooper today Camp! When I was at traffic lights I was waiting for them to change 3-5 times before I could make my way thru and of course the impatience of everyone made people do bonehead stuff! Oh well, whataya gonna do!? πŸ™‚

  4. Barb W. in L.A. Says:

MAK, try primal screaming to help relieve the tension (ha-ha!). Watching Pigott bring up those bones makes me wonder how they don’t do damage on the way out. Thanks for putting up with the frustration. 3 more days to go…But who’s counting, right?!

  5. MAK Says:

I’m counting! And believe me I was screaming a few choice words at times!! lol I was so surprised when I saw the bones on my computer when playing back the video-I couldn’t see them on my little LCD camera screen. I just thought it was an unsuccessful pellet purge! πŸ™‚

Thank you for your dedication, MAK! We rely on you to keep us updated on the falcons, but I know you are going through some pretty good frustration this week. Keep the faith! Only a few more days till Spider people are gone, and the falcons prevail once more!

  7. Ginny Says:

Thank you for all you do MAK! I really look forward to your reports and pics and videos!
And I loved the new one of the river!

  8. MAK Says:

Margaret, the falcons are doing just fine with Spidey in town but I could use one of his webs that come out of his wrists to swing from building to building and avoid all the traffic below. lol
Ginny, how did I know you would like that river video!? πŸ™‚

  9. Ginny Says:

    LOL MAK!!! πŸ™‚
Thank you again my friend πŸ™‚

  10. MAK Says:

    You’re welcome Ginny! πŸ™‚
