Morning watch 8-26-11

By Rochester falcon watcher MAK

Arriving downtown around 5:50am I had to maneuver through road crews at more than one intersection. Slowly but surely they are paving the way from Main and Broad streets down to the Broad St. bridge. Having found no falcons in the Times Square area I drove through to the east side. At one point I saw one on the south side railing  of  HSBC but when I drove to a better vantage point it was gone. Making my way back I went over by the FCT and saw nothing. Going back to, and parking on the Broad St. bridge  I waited a couple minutes and looking around thought I might get skunked on my last short watch.  With just  7  minutes left before I had to leave there she was…the Beautyful one over on the Frontier Communications Tower 2nd arm on the south side. Woohoo! I sped over to the city hall parking lot tweeted it out and took a few pics.

I then packed up and left for home. Tomorrow I will be leaving early to go to the New York State fair after a 10-15 year hiatus (I’m very excited) so I won’t be going on a falcon watch.

I’d like to say to all the people who will be affected by Hurricane Irene this weekend to stay safe and keep smiling! 🙂

Have fun at the fair, MAK. Lots of critters there, if mostly domestic.

I also extend my wishes for a safe passage of Irene on its way north.

Finally, since Imprints seems to have been abandoned, I will repeat my question here:
What happened to the Quest tracking data? Did the harness come off finally? did the money run out back in April?

  2. Ginny Says:

Thank you MAK for your best wishes…I am scared but I pray this will pass without too much damage.
Have a good time tomorrow!! 🙂

Be safe Ginny! – Carol P.

@Alison – Imprints should be updated soon. Sorry about that. But to answer your questions. Quest’s tracking data is still coming in as far as I know, but since she continues to be seen at the nestsite with Kendal and Harlequin, there has been no need to post her whereabouts. Yes, she still has her transmitter, although it looked like it might be parting low on the harness a bit. Mark Nash and other CPF volunteers and folks at Harlequin are continuing to report sightings of the family at the nest site. They are currently reporting that Quest still has her transmitter.

Yes. and in the most recent pics of Quest posted on Thursday, her transmitter is visible. I do have a question about that. It seems to be falling off, and in a pic from Thurs, Quest appeared to be rolling in some pebbles on a ledge. Donna suggested that maybe she was trying to remove the transmitter. My question is: after three plus years of wearing that transmitter, is there a chance that the material has become embedded in her skin? Is that the reason that it has not come off before this? And perhaps that is the reason she was seen picking at it this summer? I’d hate for that to become an issue or a sorce of irritation/infection for Quest.

P.S: Have fun at the fair,MAK! I think it’s been about 10-15 years since I’ve been as well! Will you make a pit stop at Montezuma? I bet you will!

Seriously, my thoughts and prayers are with all the people living along the east coast, and especially those in NYC/NJ/LI and New England. My sisters and my mother live on LI, and they are gathering round and preparing for a scary event. Be well to all.

And my thoughts are with all the wildlife along the coasts. Tough time for them too. Keep all in our thoughts!

Quest has been wearing the harness for three years. In that time she has moulted at least 3 times, so it is not embedded in her skin, margaret. Indeed, she may be doing what she is doing because she is having her late summer moult.
