Falcon Watch – 8/3/09 – 6:40 am – Mariah at KP on an Early Morning Hunt

From Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Well, after a Mariah-less weekend (and believe me I tried!), on my way into work today, I spotted a Falcon (which I believe was Mariah) up on the same antenna (Research Lab Bldg, Kodak Park) this morning at 6:40 am.

I only had a moment before I had to be on my way. As I was taking a look at her in the beautiful morning sun, she spread her wings and stooped off of the building, low. She zipped around the building and headed in my direction, quickly veering off and heading low to the south.

I never saw her come back up, but pigeons scattered everywhere! I wished her good hunting and went on my way.

What a wonderful way to start my day!

Carol P.

What a great way to start the week! Thanks for reporting.

So glad to hear about Carol’s Mariah sighting. Do you think she has established a new territory for herself? It is my hope that she finds a suitable mate and soon. At least Mariah is smart enough to know that two against one is not a fair fight. Maybe next spring will be different. As long as Mariah gets to live free and safe, if it is a little north of Kodak Tower, is that so bad? Thanks again to all the watchers and their updates. M has certainly kept you all very busy this year.

In the normal course of things peregrines mate up in the late winter and early spring when the drive to mate and reproduce is strong. Late summer and fall are not really the right moment. I am not looking for Mariah to find a mate until March 2010, but then I will hope real hard!

I’m so glad to hear she is there…thanks

Someone is in the nest box on the main camera. I am guessing Beauty, the chest looks a bit pinkish (could be sunset, too).

  6. Sue in Ithaca Says:

Wondering who it is as well. Has been there for over an hour. Beautiful sight!

  7. Joyce Says:

You probably found out already…yes, that was Beauty you saw in the nestbox.

Sorry for the problem with getting the most current Falcon Watches. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Yesterday (Wednesday 8/5) morning, I drove by Kodak Park around 6:40 am and saw Mariah rounding up a flock of Pigeons. She was above them, following them.

    Thanks, Carol! GO, Mariah…
