Morning Falcon Watch 9-14-15

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Yay the rain has gone and the sun came out this morning with a temperature of 54 (F) 12 (C)

As I started my watch at the north end of the resident parking at Seneca Towers Seth was on the north side railing. Struggling to keep his footing with the busy breeze that was blowing.

A couple minutes passed then Billie floated in for a landing on the north side below the railing near the northwest corner.

Half a minute after Billie joined him Seth flew off assisted by the wind like Billie was when she came in for her landing.

I left around 7am for downtown. I made one trip around and ended up on State St. watching Dot.ca (DC) who was perched on the southeast corner of the Kodak Office launchpad.

He turned around a couple times did some stretching and pooped.

DC flew off in a big hurry to the northeast at 7:26am and didn’t come back so I left to do a search .

I never found Beauty but from the Andrews St. bridge I spotted DC up in front of the Powers building nest box.

Pat tweeted that she had seen 2 falcons fly out from the elevator shaft of OCSR and were chasing each other with one screaming, possibly a third one was seen as well. I was already running late for an 8am appointment so I couldn’t go check things out. However, I ended my watch smiling after seeing 3 out of our 4 resident Rochester Peregrine Falcons! 🙂

I noticed when there were 2 being watched, 1 was on FCT, so yeah, there probably was 3.

MAK, I’m thinking it was possibly Beauty in the OCSR elevator shaft, and a juvie trying (successfully) to get her out of there. Tough to tell with no binocs, the morning light and their fast flights. There was a falcon in the shaft and then another falcon made several quick passes in and out of the shaft, screaming all the while. Finally, the bird that was in the shaft flew out and toward TSB, and the screamer chased after it. They flew at least twice around TSB, then around Mercury, then a third bird (possibly a falcon) joined in and they all flew over my head and headed north. Then two of the three flew west, and I lost sight of them all. This was all at about 7:35-7:40.

I don’t think any of their actions were necessarily aggressive; just spirited, shall we say.

Donna, I finally found the FCT bird on the archives. It could have been the falcon that didn’t fly west over Main Street, because it landed just above the dish on FCT at 7:46, which would be about the exact time I saw the two fly west and lost sight of the other one.

They move so fast that it can be hard to keep up with more than one at a time Pat. I’d say it’s a safe bet that a juvie, probably Genesee was harassing Beauty for food. He has come back several times for that reason. I did check the OCSR elevator shaft on my trip around when I first arrived downtown and didn’t see anyone up there. Maybe Beauty went in there to hide from the juvie. Always so many questions when it comes to our falcons that never get answered-and that’s part of the reason we observe them! It’s a learning experience!!! 🙂
