Banding 2017 for Quest offspring 6-1-17

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Joyce and I took a trip to Toronto,Ontario, Canada yesterday to witness the banding of Quests’ offspring with a new male. He has been nicknamed Mystery because he has no bands. We got to hang out with good friend, Ann Brokelman (photographer extraordinaire/wildlife rescuer/lover). There were 3 boys and 1 girl banded:

Female named Aurora band Z 05 red tape

Male named Nemo band Y 39 blue tape

Male named Ndawendang (Hunter) named by Toronto First Nation School band Y 40 yellow tape

Male named Archimedes band Y 41 Green tape

Afterwards, Ann took us to check out the nest site of a Red-tailed Hawk family. There were 3 offspring that were just about ready to fledge. After that we parted ways as Ann had to go help with a deer situation, so Joyce and I went to Rosetta Gardens Park where we enjoyed some peaceful time with the flowers and wildlife. And we got to see the bench that was dedicated to the late, great “Big” Frank Butson, another of our good Canadian friends.

Last, but not least we met up with yet another good friend, Patty Gale. She treated us to dinner and then the 3 of us visited the Yellow Pages nest site where Rochester born Linn and her mate, George greeted us with some flying when we arrived. We were able to figure out where their nest is but could see no eyasses. They don’t use a man made scrape at this location-she lays her eggs in different spots of the building ledges and roof each year.

We had a fabulous day with falcons and friends and I’d like to thank Ann, Patty and especially Joyce! Until next time keep smiling everyone! 🙂

  4. MAK Says:

Yes, two and two Donna-what exactly confused you!? LOL It was our first time back to Toronto in 3 years and very nice to go again. 🙂

  5. MAK Says:

Thanks Lynne! I’m very grateful for Joyce to let me tag along-she’s a good egg! 🙂

  6. Joyce Says:

I wasn’t paying attention to the details, but looking at the band numbers in a row, it was probably 3 males. They had eyases in 2 places. One location was measuing, weighing & trimming talons. The other put a hood on the eyas while doing some blood draw and other check ups. I was watching both.

  7. Joyce Says:

ADDENDUM – In MAK’s pics, there is a juvenile peregrine that was rescued from the Roger’s Centre. It came off the roof too soon, and since they don’t band those eyases, they used this opportunity to band, draw blood etc.

  8. Ann Brokelman Says:

It was such a great get together and happy hugs.
Btw the deer situation was finally resolved at midnight

Hey Mak, terrific photos. You got right in there like Ann did! Perfect day for bird watching wasn’t it! As if the Peregrine banding wasn’t exciting enough, Ann takes us on a wild ride through East Toronto to see red tails and take over a strangers back yard. Only in the birding photographer would does that happen, eh! Thanks again Ann. Looking forward to seeing more and hearing about your outings Mak.
