So, What Happens During a Food Transfer? (7/17/20)
By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.
We’ve talked about food transfers in our falcon watch reports over the years. But, unless you see one in person, it’s hard to imagine what really happens. Today I was very lucky to get a series of pictures of a food transfer from Beauty to Hope. You’ll notice that Hope will flip upside down to take the food from Beauty. I just wish the pictures were a little clearer. But you’ll get the idea. Enjoy! 🙂

Super photos Carol! I got to see a food transfer right overhead at UB this year but I didn’t have my camera ready.🙁 it is amazing how they know how to do that.

Fantastic shots, Carol P.! I was wondering if these juvies were practicing this skill yet. Sure enough! Thank you for catching this!

It looks less like the juvie takes the food from the talons of the parent and more like the parent drops the prey at short distance into the juvie’s waiting talons. But maybe there was a moment where they both had talons on the prey that was too short a time to be in the sequence posted.

I’ve seen food transfers done all different ways Alison. 🙂
