By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.
Today was certainly a better day than yesterday. What a difference a day makes. No sun at all yesterday with lots of fog and rain. Today, LOTS of sun! They’re talking about snow in Rochester this weekend, with the possibility of a White Christmas, which is always a lovely thing and something I dream for. 🙂
Here are my tweets from today, plus others that do no report:
7:20 am – Donna on RfalconcamNow – “Beauty on Mercury” as seen on Camera #1
3:18 pm – Donna on RfalconcamNow – “Beauty on Mercury” as seen on Camera #1
4:00 pm – Carol P – “DT. Beauty on Mercury.” and boy did she have a full crop!
4:10 pm – Carol P – “BS. So far 1 falcon on SE corner. BST I think.”
4:40 pm – Carol P – “BS. P just flew in carrying prey landing on SW corner.”
4:50 pm – Carol P – “BS. BST left.”
5:10 pm – Carol P – “BS. Both P&BST settled in roosting area on NE end. Time to go.”

Thanks to Donna’s tweet at 3:18 pm that Beauty was on the Mercury statue, there was a good chance that is where I would find her. That’s exactly where she was when I arrived on the Broad St Bridge at about 3:50 pm. She had a huge crop and she seemed very content up there on Mercury’s money bag standing on one foot, with the other tucked up into her chest feathers. Being owned by two Cockatiels 🙂 I find it fascinating to compare the behavior of the small birds with the larger birds of prey. There are so many similarities.
As usual, I had a very short window of daylight to find the Rochester Falcons before it got to dark to see them. I took a few pics of Beauty and then drove over to the BS location.

On the trip over to BS, I saw this beautiful Red-tail Hawk on a telephone pole near the river, south of the downtown area.

I arrived at the BS location at 4:10 pm and slowly circled the building. BST was on the south side (back) of the building on the SE corner.
Two different angles.

I parked on the south side after checking the rest of the building for Pigott, with no luck finding her. Lots of Crows were passing south of the building, but they didn’t seem to be heading towards downtown. Have to wonder if they are now avoiding their downtown roost?
At 4:40 pm, Pigott flew in from the east, carrying prey, medium to large size bird. She landed on the SW corner, opposite to BST’s position. Neither of them vocalized as Pigott, with a very full Crop like Beauty, walked the food further in on the roof where I could not see her. She came back out to the corner and started to preen. Obviously she cached her remaining food up there for later consumption. Or maybe BST was keeping notes on where it was so he could sneak a few nibbles. lol

First BST and then Pigott took off and flew around to the north side (front) of the building. At 5:10 pm, I found both Pigott and BST in their nighttime roost area on the NE side of the building. Pigott was 4 windows down on the right side of the windowsill and BST was on the 2nd window down tucked in on the left side of the building.

Now that Pigott and BST (the BS location Tiercel) were tucked in for the evening, I decided it was time to head home for some dinner of my own. But, I decided to drive through downtown on the way home to check on Beauty one more time. It was really dark by this time. She was gone from Mercury, so I headed over to the OCSR (old Changing Scenes Restaurant) to see if I could see her up inside the elevator shaft. But, it was too dark up there and I really couldn’t tell if she was there or not.
I was very satisfied to end my evening Falcon Watch after finding all three Rochester Falcons, making it another very good day!
I’ll leave you with a picture taken through my windshield while driving down Main St to get closer to OCSR. Enjoy your evening everyone and remember that you just need to click on a picture to see a larger version. Thanks!!!
