Let's not forget that Nick is the son of Miriam who was released in 2003 by the CPF for Project Release.  Miriam ended up in Dearborn, Michigan and during a freezing rain storm, got her tail frozen to a building.  She was found and rehabbed and now she nests on the Whittier Apts in Detroit.  Her long time mate Allegro, now 14 years old, was just injured in a fight weeks ago and is rehab.  A new boy is on site but no ID as of yet.

We went through the same scenario of unhatched eggs back in 2011 and it was seemingly due to the weather.  We have had a cold snap this spring with bouts of wet.  The last time we had a spring like that ( 2011 ) we had 25 unhatched eggs in southern Ontario.  I think this could be due to the cold, wet weather.

The post that Donna copied from the CPF website above contains an error.  I already fixed it on the CPF post but Donna is just tooooooo quick!!  I posted that Freddie and Bud-z are brothers from Fury and Baltimore but it should have read Fury and *7/X.  I posted the wrong parent...  ...not enough coffee.  Sorry about the confusion!

Today at MED with Bruce Massey.  Janet Still Going Strong!!

On Thursday, we officially scaled back the MEC watch as Janet, the remaining fledgling, was staying well elevated and making good landings despite the efforts of the unidentified female to chase her off. Sante, the resident male, was on top of the new female each time she made a run at Janet and was able to turn her away from the juvenile every time. This gave us the confidence to scale the watch back to evening site checks.
Due to the heavy rains and blustery winds, we held off our first evening check on Janet to this evening and Bruce Massey was first on site in the early afternoon. After searching the area for over an hour, there was no sign of any peregrines in the area until he ventured down to Burnhamthorpe Road where he located the male and as Bruce headed back towards MEC, the adult female made her first appearance. There was still no sign of Janet and so Bruce left to check in on Holcim until we could meet up later.
We met up at the site at approximately 6:00pm at which time we had the adult female on the nest building and the resident male sitting right beside the nest box. The female left her spot and headed over to MEC 3 where she stayed for over half an hour roosting and preening all the while looking north. Bruce decided to head north towards Janet’s last known location and I took the south to southeast sector. While Bruce was walking north of the condos near the nest site, the adult female took off straight north and was flying above another peregrine. He walked across the bridge that spans the 401 and called me when he reached Eglinton where he had three raptors perched on three separate condo towers in the complex. Once I arrived, a quick peek with the scope revealed the adult female on the south tower, Sante the resident male on the center tower and a Red Tailed hawk on the north tower. The adult female left her perch on the south tower and headed west between the buildings and when I checked around the center building, all of a sudden I had two females in the air both circling the building. JANET!! She landed on the eastern face of the center tower of the Hwy. 10 and Eglinton condos and I quickly moved into position to see her. She was on a balcony 21 stories up and thanks to Sante I was able to find her. He did several flights that brought him fanning up in front of her as he tried to get her to move. No luck. This attention by the male brought over the adult female that was now diving Janet with the male harassing the adult female in defense of his chick. The adult female was successfully turned off by the male from attacking the chick but she was still in the mood for a fight so she took it to the Red Tail who at this point had not moved an inch on the north condo. She made a dozen stoops and contacts with the hawk and at one point the male joined in the fight. The hawk was flipping upside down like a jumping bean in an effort to address this pair as they continued to attack it. The bird finally laid belly down on the roof until the peregrines gave up the battle.
It was at this point that Sante left the building and headed east on a hunt while being chased by the adult female. He was successful in catching a meal and made one pass in front of Janet before heading back to the MEC complex. Janet remained on the balcony edge until the rain began to move in and she made a short flight landing on another balcony on the same building but slightly higher. As the rain began to really come down, she took one last flight out and around to the south of the condo and landed on the building behind it just shy of the rooftop. This is where she decided that bed was in order and she was asleep by the time Bruce and I had cycled back to find her. I must tip my hat to Bruce for his incredible work in following and finding Janet as she flew well out of the territory to the north. He did this all on foot no less!! We were very pleased to see Janet after Friday’s storm and that she is staying high and flying well. We will be back out tomorrow for another check on her and how things are progressing in her offsite training.
5  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcon Offspring / Re: Quest and Kendal - Toronto/Don Mills on: 21-May-12, 11:34:49 PM
Yes Kendal and Tiago are brothers from the 18 King St East nest site in Toronto.  Their parents are Erin, 1998 hatch from Froedtert Malt in Wisconsin ( daughter of Raynie and Leopold ) and Windwhistler, 1998 hatch from Etobicoke Sun Life ( son of Alberta and Toby ).  Good strong parental lines is right!!  The pair are 14 years old this year and have run the site since 2003.  Windwhistler has produced this year his 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st chick in his career of which 34 are with Erin.  We have also just located Dougal, a 2008 hatch from 18 King St E. and brother to Kendal and Tiago, in London, Ontario with Thunder, a 2005 hatch of Fancy and Groucho from Syracuse.  The 18 King St East nest site is a really good strong family line and a very productive nest site as seen in Kendal and Tiago!!

I was really happy to find O'Connor.  We have had many moments together, that girl and I, and the folks in Ohio where she is from were very happy to hear of her resighting.  She is one of the young from Bandit and Chesapeake in Akron and has been kicking butt up here every since she arrived.

Absolutely true Carly.  The birds are driven to reproduce and will seek out the best site and the best mate with the best of everything.  They'll fight to get it and fight to keep it as the biological drive to have young is undeniable.  The best equals success, so to speak.  It sure doesn't make me feel any better when they get into it, knowing that they essentially can't deny themselves as they are so driven to reproduce.
8  Rochester Falcons / Rochester Falcons News / Re: Beauty Found Injured - Downtown Rochester (2/10/12) on: 13-Feb-12, 11:47:21 AM
Although it seems that Peregrines in Canada are well behaved they actually are not.  In 2011, we had 4 adult changeovers in southern Ontario.  McKenzie replaced Sir Adam at the Burlington Lift Bridge, Stormin replaced Irving at Canada Square, Marla's mate at Nanticoke was run off altogether and she had to raise her three chicks alone and Infinity, after reclaiming her territory from the rogue, has since been replaced by that same rogue in Mississauga.  We have quite the battles up here as well.  In 2008, O'Connor took Juliet to the ground in front of the William Osler Hospital and the two just went at it.  Trust me, the peregrines up here are not as well mannered as they appear.  drool

They way I feel about it is that it never gets any easier from a watchers standpoint as we see the birds we come to know and love get into it with others.  From a biological perspective, the strongest will prevail and pass on their genes creating a stronger population overall.  With a finite number of available nesting territories, spats are due to happen.  From a falcon watchers perspective, genetics be damned cause its always sad to lose one.  Beauty is a really tough cookie and the fact that she's made it through the weekend is a really good sign.  Our good thoughts go out to her from across the pond and we hope that her recovery is a speedy one.

Very nice story about the name "Kathy Q".  I've always thought of her as Chantal and had completely forgotten about that name.  It's nice to hear the origins of some of the names the birds have.  I can't say that Ponce Kingsley ever "pounced" on me but his final brood sure did.  They were a racous five for sure!  Majesty is still in Michigan with Barry at the UM Northbank Center and is the last of the five that remain.

Dumpsterkitty was correct earlier, Chantal IS still going at the Market Tower.  Too early and not enough coffee  ???  ( I was a little thrown by the Kathy Q. Kinda like the Mandy / Erin thing )  She took over that site in 2002 and has raised 35 chicks to date with Kinney.  Ponce Kingsley was "Ponce" for Ponce de Leon and it became Pounce in large part because of his mannerisms.

I almost forgot to mention, not only is Erin sister to Chantal from Market Tower, Indy but also Mary Ellen at the LG&E plant in Kentucky her first year and then moved to the Miami Fort Station plant in Ohio with River Ace.  She was replaced and did not return in 2009.  Erin is the last surviving young of the 1998 Froedtert Malt clutch and is still going strong.  With her and WW now both being 14 years old, I expect to scope the ledge and see them sitting in rocking chairs and reading the paper!  Just kidding.  I've seen WW lately and he is as spry as he ever was.

Just to clarify, here's the scoop on Erin and Windwhistler.

In 2002 at 18 King St., we lost both Victoria and Ponce-Kingsley which left a void at the site.  In late 2002, Erin arrived and was photographed but not positively IDed.  Because we didn't know who she was ( none of us had scopes and stuff like that back then and that area is really tough to get a good sightline ) she was given the name "Mandy" by the watchers.  In 2003, Erin ( her real name as we now know ) and Spike ( who was Windwhistler ) laid their first clutch at 18 King.  Since 2003 to today, Erin and Windwhistler have been running that site as the resident adults.  Windwhistler-Spike concurrently ran the Sheraton nest site from 2004 to 2007 with Wind.  When Rhea Mae took over in 2008, WW changed his ways and let his son, Tiago, take it over.  Windwhistler was hatched at the Etobicoke Sun Life building ( then the Mutual Group Centre ) in 1998 to Toby and Alberta.  Erin was hatched in 1998 at the Froedtert Malt in Wisconsin to Raynie and Leopold.  The Leopold that you are thinking that Millie ( Archer's sister ) hooked up with was in Michigan at the Munroe Power Plant.  To date Erin has produced 30 chicks with WW at 18 King and Mr. WW-Spike, counting his chicks with Wind, has produced 39 chicks to date.  The offspring that WW has produced that are now breeding are Hurricane h. at Sheraton 2004, Tiago h. at King 2005, Sir Adam h. at King 2006, Ely h. at King in 2008 and Kendal h. at King in 2009.

PHEW!!  Hope that helps to sort it all out!!  Very confusing at times but that is the straight skinny on the pair.

Also might want to check with Mike Allen.  June 6, 2005 was the banding in Syracuse of Hazel, Sojourner, Juliet and Thunder.
14  Rochester Falcons / Satellite Tracking / Re: Quest in same spot for 5 days; Good News!!!!!!! on: 12-Apr-11, 04:35:25 PM
I have very exciting news for all the followers of Quest that have been concerned about her for the past few days.  Your friends up here in the Great North of Canada have sought and found her!!  I work in Toronto for the Canadian Peregrine Foundation and we received news today, and confirmed it, that Quest could very well be nesting on a low rise office tower here in Toronto.   One of our volunteers is on-site right now and has confirmed her band numbers and that she indeed has a suitor and a ledge picked out.  To read the full story and stay in touch with updates, check out our website www.peregrine-foundation.ca and look under international news.

Any ideas? Is the transmitter still working? Looks like a wooded area in Toronto. Hope she's OK.

If her transmitter did stop, will someone go out and look for it or her?
