Gad! I hope you got the wrong person. I had to pinch myself to make sure I was still alive when I read your post.
The person you are thinking of that passed away was Brian Walton. He was one of the original members of the SCPBRG and kept it going for over 30 years. The group went through tough times when the economy went bad, funding was cut and the university had to let three people go.
Now the only full time member is Glenn Stewart and he concentrates on education. He's been doing the banding at several sites and I was there when he banded the chicks in San Francisco and in Alameda at a bridge the next day.
I have a day job drafting just two blocks from where peregrines are nesting on a 34 story building, so I photograph them at noon and after work.

Location has to remain a secret, but I can tell you it was not Morro Rock. The peregrines are doing well in California now and can be found up and down the coast where the cliffs are right for nesting.
