Anyone Know About Beech Scale?
«
on:

It appears that the beech tree in our front yard may have developed Beech Scale. I did some research online and in some places they recommend reporting any infestation to the state's dept. of natural resources (NY DEC for us). I went to the DEC website but couldn't find anything about reporting Beech Scale.
Has anyone had any experience dealing with Beech Scale? Any idea how best to deal with it?

Jim - way back in the late 1980's, I found shell growth on our 2nd Century (Hudson River and Greenwood Lake). Very early days of zebra mussles and I didn't want them getting into the lake. I contacted NY DEC, provided samples, pictures, and other details - they weren't zebras thank God. NY DEC was great - both helpful and appreciative. We did a similiar thing with the Emerald Ash Borer in MD with good response. I'd make the phone call - especially with that Ash Borer digging about (God only knows what other invasive critters are munching unchecked).

Jim,
You might also check with the Cornell Cooperative Extension. They often deal with plant pests.

I
was going to suggest the Cooperative Extension. We've taken many samples of things from our yard to the Master Gardeners and for a small fee they have given sheets of info to us on what they found and how to treat.
