3 peregrine falcon chicks hatch in Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Three peregrine falcons chicks have successfully hatched atop a 15-story building on the Indiana State University campus.

The birds were banded last week by state Department of Natural Resources staff wearing hard hats, protective eye wear and thick coats as two parent birds circled above the Statesman Towers complex.

ISU biology Professor Steven Lima tells the Tribune-Star (http://bit.ly/K7ZlkT ) the chicks hatched as a result of the third nesting attempt by the nesting pair. He says it's likely the first successful peregrine falcon nest in western Indiana and adjacent eastern Illinois in 50 years.
