 A burrowing owl fluttered to the air as county parks ecologist Dustin McLean approached the bird's underground burrow, made of plastic plumbing materials buried on conservation land in southwestern Riverside County.

About a half-dozen cattle grazing on the sloping field paused to watch the commotion.
