Dr. Balonek, a vet here in Rochester who has cared for some of our falcons, is having a transplant next week.  One of his human clients is donating a kidney

Donna, he is the one who took care of Jem.  This is from the local news. I was hoping they would have posted the video of the newscast but I don't see it

Rich and I are both organ donors - figure when we are dead, we don't need any of it, so if there is some use to our parts, have at it.  Skin is an organ.  My dental bone grafts came from cadavers, so my hips didn't have to get scraped up.  A childhood friend just received a liver transplant.  My point is simple - sign the donor cards, check the box on the back of your drivers license, or whatever the options are in your state - just do it!  Lives are saved - Lives are made better by this simple act of kindness.  Good Luck to Dr. Balonek!

Not only should your organ donor status be recorded on your drivers' license, it should be prominent in your Advance Directive/Living Will, or whatever equivalent you've chosen.  I have copies of one called *Five Wishes* on file at my Doctor's office and hospital, with family and selected friends, and the original in my fridge with the rest of the papers.   In my case, "anything suitable for transplant" is what I wrote.

Good luck to the doc and kudos to the donor! I have also made it known that they can have any part of me they want when I die I won't need it!  Grin

It's funny-when I gave a copy of my advance directives to my parents they were shocked that I wanted to donate any usable parts.  When I asked why, neither had a good reason.  They'd just never thought of doing it.  This after my husband died for lack of an available liver for transplant.

Anyway-all the best to the Doc & his donor...

Has anyone heard how the Doc and his donor made out with their surgery? Hope all went well and his body accepted it. Talk about a "gift that keeps on giving!"  angel
