Descriptions:

Aldrin was the lunar module pilot on Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing in history. He set foot on the Moon at 03:15:16 (UTC) on July 21, 1969, following mission commander Neil Armstrong.

Armstrong for Neil Armstrong. No one flew higher or faster. A worthy childhood hero if there ever was one.

Carson is for Rachel Carson - environmentalist.

Horus was a god in Egyptian mythology, most often depicted as a falcon, most likely a Lanner or Peregrine, with a Falcon-like head. Just as Peregrines are masters of the sky, Horus was known as the sky god. Horus was also known as a god of war and hunting, a protector much like a Peregrine is a protector of its family and territory, a great hunter and, as a warrior, it will fight to maintain its territory.

Leonardo As in diVinci. Pioneer in flight.

Mercury was the Roman god of commerce and was carried by the north wind as messenger of the gods. He is depicted on a Rochester landmark, the statue atop the Aqueduct Building, upon which our falcons love to watch, eat, and mate.

Muir is in honor of John Muir. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Muir

Three polls have been posted (male name, female name, gender-neutral name). The voting period ends on Monday.

One of this year's eyases will be given either an appropriate gender-specific name or a gender-neutral name, whichever receives the most votes. In case of a tie, the number of times each of the 2 names was submitted will be used as a tie breaker. If that is a tie too, a coin will be flipped.
