Descriptions:

Amani is from "Amani ya Juu" meaning “higher peace” in Swahili.

Chinook is the name of a North American Indian tribe in the western U.S. It also is the name given to a warm, dry wind that blows down the east side of the Rockies during winter and early spring that causes the rapid thawing of the snow. The wind definition is reminiscent of a peregrine falcon stooping for prey.

Genesee translates to "shining or beautiful valley" according to its American Indian roots. For those who follow the Times Square Building Peregrines, it is the river that flows through Downtown Rochester. It rushes thru the High Falls, which provides a wonderful training ground for our fledglings. The river attracts all forms of wildlife, and its presence helps ensure a food source for our eyases as well. The name Genesee is a tribute to the falcons' birthplace and heritage.

Murie is in honor of Margaret Murie who was called the Grandmother of the Conservation Movement. She was also a recipient of the Audubon Medal and The Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Nimbus has several meanings: a splendid atmosphere or aura, as of glamor, that surrounds a person or thing; a cloudy radiance said to surround a classical deity when on earth; a radiant light that appears usually in the form of a circle or halo about or over the head in the representation of a god, demigod, saint, or sacred person such as a king or an emperor; a rain cloud, especially a low dark layer of clouds such as a nimbostratus.

Soar because when a raptor or any bird is soaring, it's a beautiful site. Gliding on God's
breath.

Venture can be to take a risk as in a verb or to brave a hardship. It is also a noun as to an undertaking that can be wrought with danger. The falcon risks much in establishing itself in our world. It is a brave bird that will fly far and travel wide to find a mate and rear its own.

Three polls have been posted (male name, female name, gender-neutral name). The voting period ends on Monday.

One of this year's eyases will be given either an appropriate gender-specific name or a gender-neutral name, whichever receives the most votes. In case of a tie, the number of times each of the 2 names was submitted will be used as a tie breaker. If that is a tie too, a coin will be flipped.
