Several years ago the west end of Rochester’s abandoned subway tunnel was filled as part of the Broad Street Improvement Project. Now a planned downtown development could permanently close off one of the last remaining entry points to Rochester’s old subway tunnel. Morgan Management is waiting for approvals to build a five-story luxury apartment complex at Court Street and South Avenue, right smack on top of the subway’s east entrance and the former site of the Court Street subway platform…
Although the City of Rochester discourages the public from entering the tunnel, it is currently accessible via an open gate along the Genesee Riverway Trail at South Ave external link (near Woodbury Blvd).

I vote for the preservation of the tunnels in some interesting way!

According to a posted comment, this same development group owns BS and suggests putting up apartments there instead. Sounds like a plan!

I vote for the elevated walkway with an information/gift shop and forget about the apartment complex-it would look way out of place there. Of course, none of us will have a say in the matter.  gum

Four years ago, they wanted to "rewater" downtown by tearing off the deck of the Broad St. Bridge and closing Broad St. from Stone St. to West Main St. so it could be turned into a pedestrian-friendly waterfront concourse with fountains and pools. That would have closed off the tunnel too.

There probably will be shopping, parking, dining and the like, since most new developments require "Mixed Use".  Toss in some business too.
