Over the past week or more we have been observing what we believed to be falcons flying around our neighborhood in the 19th ward.

The other day I observed 7 in a dead tree across the road and there has been a ton of vocalizations.

Just now I was able to scope one of them and it is DEFINATELY a young peregin. Actually two of them, one with food!

I will provide an address to anyone who is interested, but would prefer it not to be published.

Please contact me at marti.macadam@gmail.com if you are interested in this wonderful family!

It is a neighborhood in Rochester-I'm not familiar with where it exactly is.

It's just a few miles southwest of downtown Rochester.

It really does! Great memories of 2003, 2004 and 2005!

Very exciting if this new peregrine family has five offspring!

Had a VERY good look.  These are not peregrins, but rather merlins.  There were 4 young doing the talon tag thing and one sat on a high dead branch for quite a while.  The other day there were 7 which I believed included both adults.

This makes alot more sense, as there are no tall buildings nearby, but lots of tall pine trees, which merlins like.

I have also seen merlins before in the area.  See post from me in 2009.

Still very cool and still falcons, just smaller.

We have seen merlins a few years ago as well. How exciting! Nothing like watching juvies learning their skills. Can't wait to check it out.

Merlins were very common when I lived in the 19th Ward (which runs along the west bank of the river from downtown to Genesee Valley Park, and extends quite far west from the river). There is a whole colony in GVP---made quite a racket when I was hiking there earlier this spring---and there used to be another colony in Mt. Hope Cemetery. when their paths crossed, the territorial displays were impressive!
