what kind of gull is that? Around here, "common-or-garden" variety. I was feeding some the other day; they bark like dogs at each other. Ill-tempered, brilliantly white varmints.

It's a Ring-billed Gull.  They make up the main bulk of our gull population here in Toronto...

ring-billed, OK. I sort of figured that stripe on the bill wouldn't go unrecognized by a bird namer. It's a big part of the population here too, and they're really pushy; I've often competed with them for parking spots at the supermarket; they try to land right THERE, right THEN. At the lake there are a lot of terns and other things though, as well as these monsters.
