Zuzu, our favorite Southern Flying Squirrel, stopped by our window to for a meal last night. Our house guests from San Francisco were understandably delighted. She was accompanied by Zaza, a larger squirrel who is very shy and is a less frequent visitor.

We hadn't seen Zuzu since last summer. I figured she had just changed her nightly foraging schedule, perhaps because of a new nest. There have been a several nights this winter when I saw the feeder swaying as if something had jumped off earlier.
Yesterday, I put out her favorite flavor of food cake -- beetle. I'd hoped that this might tempt her to make an earlier visit. Last night, all three of us got to see her at about 10 PM.

Thursday night was cool and rainy. Perhaps that prompted Zuzu to stop by earlier than normal, at about 10 PM. My daughter, Catherine, spotted her and called to us. The visit lasted until most of the seed cake was gone. At that point she jumped down to the windowsill and dove off into the night. Catherine remarked that it was amazing that Zuzu could stay so well-groomed among bark, pine sap, and rain.
