A pair of peregrine falcons are getting a new home this spring at a lime manufacturing plant on the Ohio River in Pendleton County. At the Carmeuse Natural Chemicals plant in Butler, Ky., the maintenance crew found a falcon nest atop a building at the plant. Department of Fish and Wildlife employees built a new nesting box and added a perch to the front then lined the box with pea gravel to simulate cliff rock. Carmeuse employees installed the box. "Once a pair of falcons shows up at a spot they usually nest there for life," said Kate Heyden, avian biologist for the department, so the nest was moved to a safer location.
