I am glad the people are safe!  I do know the flooding, wind damage, and lengthy power outages, having experienced many a hurricane in NE Florida.  We, in NE Florida dodged the bullet with Irene.
Everybody, be careful and stay safe.

Who would have thought that Irene could cause such damage in the Catskills and upstate?  The coastal areas were bracing, and the inland areas in NY, PA, and NJ sustained great damage.  Those pictures are awful!

One person died on the Croton River yesterday.  Five people got into a boat and went out into the river just above where it meets the Hudson River.  I was at the boat ramp at around 5 pm photographing the birds and hoping to see our eagles enjoying the wind.  I did not see the boat or people, but even at low tide at that time the river was higher than at high tide and current was faster than I have ever seen it.  Three rescue team members tried to go out in a raft and rescue the boaters, but they got swept under the train trestle and into the Hudson.  Everybody around here knows not to go into the river under the conditions we had yesterday.  It was a tragedy that didn't need to happen.

We weathered the storm a little better than other storms.  Power stayed on and had about the usual amount of water in the basement.  I could not believe the damage farther north on the Hudson.  I don't think people up north were prepared for it.

I read in our local Charlotte paper this morning that the Ocracoke dunes are gone.  So sorry, Paul.  Coastal Carolina has been severely affected.  But the wild horses of Assateague are OK.

CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. — The Chincoteague ponies are safe after Hurricane Irene tore past their island.

Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company spokeswoman Denise Bowden said Sunday that the herd of wild horses owned by the fire company since the 1920s made it through the storm without any nicks or scratches.

The company owns more than 100 of the wild ponies that graze on nearby Assateague Island. The ponies made famous by the novel "Misty of Chincoteague" and a subsequent movie are now visited by hundreds of thousands of people a year.

Bowden says pony committee members opened gates to let the ponies reach higher ground on Friday and put out extra hay. She says when committee members returned Sunday morning the ponies "looked fantastic," as docile and complacent as usual, as if nothing had happened.

I got power back sometime during the night but my pump shut off so I had no water...no time this morning to investigate.  Hopefully just the low pressure switch cut out.

Glad all reporting that they made it thru Irene even though so much damage and flooding.  Nicole In Montreal wrote me today that they had (in her words) +++rain but are OK.
