Father Mike, FDNY, proably the first "known" person to die 9/11/2001. He was a parish priest - St Joseph's in West Milford, NJ. He married my sister to her 1st ex-husband and he baptised both of her sons. A tribute to Father Mike:

There are - we just need to listen and pay attention. Watched Father Jonathan this morning (I'm not Catholic, btw) and he offered such hope! I was left with a good feeling of optimism. We just need to put our garbage at the curb and listen to what God, through his spokespeople, is telling us. It felt good!

Absolutely riveting.
And here is the message from Chip Reynolds on the Half Moon Ship Replica that was anchored at Gravesend Bay with 12 students aboard who witnessed the whole event. Chip posted a wonderful 10 years afterward reflection that I will post here when I find it again.

I saw this on TV on 9-11. What a great story, all the tugs, boats, Ferry's that came out to rescue the people of Manhattan. AWESOME!!

I think I have it someplace, but in the months following 9/11 one of the boating publications (either Boating or Power & Motoryatch) did a spread of the boats of the Hudson River. I believe there is a book about it too. I featured the pleasure boats, such as what we had on the River, AND people did come from all over with their boats to get people to the Jersey side. One guy hitched a ride to somewhere behind Sandy Point and then had to get home to somewhere in nothern NJ.
