Beautiful pics as always!

This reminds me...while driving up to Saratoga to my periodontist (he's worth the 2 hour drive) and on the way back I noticed huge numbers of butterflies fly over & near the Thruway.  They were orange, so I'd guess they were Monarchs.  I think the caterpillars develop (what's the right term-pupate?) into butterflies on milkweed, so it makes sense they'd be on highway edges.  There were just so many of them!

I remember reading or hearing a few years ago that monarchs were in decline in NY.  Ward Stone (then biologist for NYS DEC) had asked everyone to note if they saw ANY Monarchs and report in...I remember noting very few.  I guess they're rebounding, at least along the highway.

Re Ei and the milkweed... when a niece moved in to the "family homestead", she was told: See that raggedy patch of milkweed? Yes, the one smack in the middle of where you want to put pretty flowers? Leave it there! And you know, the child got the message - and there it remains for our summer butterflies. Good girl!
