Audubon Society called me today to report they received a call about a possibly injured hawk. I was at work so couldnt go myself so called the contact number and spoke with the secretary from P.S. 96 in the Bronx where the hawk was sitting under some bushes for quite a while she explained. It was getting close to the end of the school day and some 1100 students would be exiting the front door only feet away from the bird and she was concerned for the kids as well as the bird that if it got spooked may end up in a more dangerous position. I called our good fiend Mike Pastore from NYC Animal Care and Control who luckily had a person nearby and was able to dispatch him quickly to the scene. The CACC driver called me when he arrived asking what to do next, He was willing to try but had just 3 months as a worker for the city and never handled a bird like this before. he explained when he approached the bird it managed to get into the 15 foott all bush in front of the school and his net wouldn''t reach. i asked him to use his head and wed together come up with a solution since he confirmed it was not right and struggled to fly but jumped branch to branch to get where itr was no just out of reach.i asked him could he drive his van onto the sidewalk to get close enough but that wasnt a possibilty. Then we talked about any long pipe type thing to nudge the bird to a point he could grab it. Well he asked a custodian there and he was lent a long medal pole used to pull open the old style windows in the school . He was able to pry the gently off the branch and then catch it in the net . when he called with the news I was as excited for him as he was and as I praised him for the great work he trhanked me saying it meant a lot to hear. So this male juvenile redtailed hawk is here tonight . Nothing fractureds but sweeling on 1 wrist not permitting him to catch prey so hopefully thats the extent of the injuries and rest, steriod, and pain meds will do the trick. he ate readily as you can see and we just wanted to make sure he had food and fluids tonight and tomorrow well offer him food to eat on his own.
