My friend Tesa puts peanuts in the shell out at her feeding station and I've seen red-bellied woodpeckers grab them plenty of times. I would say they are pretty feisty as far as woodpeckers go too as I've had one in my backyard stand up to a mockingbird who are no slouch in the feisty category.
