Mariah Lays Egg #1!
At about 9:55 PM Eastern Daylight Time on March 26, Mariah laid her first egg of 2008! We’re glad to see that the recent territory battle doesn’t appear to have placed undue stress on the falcons.
Here’s a daylight picture of her with her first egg. Mariah generally lays her eggs at intervals of 50-55 hours, so egg #2 should come in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 29. Last year she surprised us with some longer egg laying times. Once, she went over 100 hours between eggs! So don’t be surprised if you don’t see a second egg when you wake up on Saturday, but keep watching! You never know when she’ll add another egg to the nest.

Awesome! I have been watching daily and was hoping the battle would not delay or prevent a clutch this year. Way to go, Mariah & Kaver.

Congratulations for the Mariah’s first egg! I’m looking forward to seeing the next egg.
I’ve watched a pair of falcons of The SUNROUTE HOTEL near the Kansai International Airport in Japan for 4 years. Izumi laid 4 eggs this year, and the hatching will be within a week!

Thanks for the updates. We’re waiting for egg #2. I have a question for you Jess. I know you can tell the birds apart from size but isn’t there another way, like the feathers on their face? I can’t tell who is who when they are laying down.
March 30th, 2008 at 3:49 PM
Monica-they do have different feather colors on their faces. Mariah has a thin band of white feathers just above her cere-the yellow part the beak between the eyes. Kaver’s feathers in that area are completely dark.
