A Third Egg for Mariah

Mariah with 3 eggs
It looks like Mariah produced egg #3 right around 4:10PM on the afternoon of April 2. That’s a little less than 56 hours after laying her second egg. She gave us our first clear view of all three eggs a few minutes later, as you can see from the time on the picture above.

Mariah with 3 eggs on Main Cam

Here’s another look courtesy of the Rochester Falconcam’s high-resolution Main camera. This is Mariah’s second year of “unpredictable” egg-laying times. We don’t like to deal in absolutes here at Imprints, but it looks like she may be establishing a new pattern in her golden years.

All 3 as Mariah Leaves
How many more eggs can we expect? That’s anyone’s guess. Watchers observed mating activity between Mariah and Kaver both in the morning and afternoon today, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple more before the egg laying is done!

at the least, we can say that she keeps us guessing!! been watching for years, and definetly thought we’d get 3 eggs, but it sounds like we might get more! and WOW! only 56 hours!! i was a little concerned after the 106 hours, but looks like we’re picking up the pace!!! Go Kaver and Mariah! Can’t wait to see what happens next!!! absolutely beautiful!!

  4. AJ Says:

Good girl, Mariah! Arn’t you the clever one. We were all ready to wait you out.
I’m thinking one just dropped out on one of your flights. Is that possible Jess?

Anyway, Congrat’s to you and Kaver.

  5. Sue Says:

    Very interesting question, AJ !!

  6. Sandy Says:

Is it possible that one could just “drop out” in flight?? I can’t believe that could happen!
This is certainly a exciting year! I have friends all over the world watching and they tell me what a super job you guys do on this site compared to others they have seen! GO ROCHESTER and Mariah and Klaver!

  7. Jess Says:

@AJ – Laying an egg is a deliberate process that Mariah begins only when she’s ready, so it’s unlikely that an egg would just drop out. Also, eggs are heavy, so Mariah is not likely to want to fly prior to laying the egg.

Another fine season starting and I am so happy! I was just thrilled to see them back! This is my second year and I am so excited. I HAVE BEEN LEARNING A LOT!!!!!!!

  9. Angela Says:

  10. Erin O Says:

This is for Sue who asked yesterday if there was a way to tell Mariah and Kaver apart. Sue if you go to the Imprints archives and look at the March 2007 archive, Jess did a great write up on the physical differences between the two. She has a picture of them side by side so it is easy to point out thier different characteristics. I found it very helpful. Now I can tell which one is Mariah and Kaver without difficulty.

I jsut got back from Florida and am happy to see everything is going along well. Before I left in December I had one of the Falcons in my back yard. it killed and ate one of the morning doves that came to my bird feeder. I thought they would have been heading soth by then. I wish I had my camera ready to take a picture.

  14. Jess Says:

@Dick – Glad you’re back! Though it’s a fun idea that one of the Rochester Peregrines dined in your back yard, it’s not too likely. You can read more about Peregrine hunting behavior in this Imprints post from last year.

  15. dale Says:

that 4/2/08 16:34 shot of M’s rear end leaving the nestbox and eggs is a terrific shot. Thanks for the log and the info, Jess!

  16. AJ Says:

Just to refresh my memory, is that Kaver we are looking at?

Be careful birds, visability is bad. Don’t lose your way or bump into something.

  17. Darby Says:

It is 10:24 Central Time (Texas) and I think we just saw a FOURTH egg. Oh please be a fourth egg, please be a fourth egg…..

This is so exciting that I have everyone at my office watching it.
