Quest has returned to her summering spot in the southeast corner of Massachusetts. She began where we left her at Chatham Port, after her brief trip into New Jersey and Long Island last week. During our most recent tracking period, Quest stayed within a fairly small area, venturing no more than 10 miles (16 km) or so on any single day.

Many of Quest’s fans may be aware that hurricane Kyle marched up the Atlantic coast of the US, eventually making landfall in Canada. It subjected the New England states, including Massachusetts, to a few days of wind and rain. None of this appears to have fazed Quest, to judge by her daily movements. Based on the data we continue to receive from her transmitter, it looks like Quest came through the bad weather in good shape.

Thanks Jess! Yes, I was among those concerned by the weather reports, though the hurricane stayed more off shore than originally predicted. I’m very glad Quest decided to stay put!

Thank you for the update on Quest! I too was thinking about her when I heard about the hurricane! I’ve been checking since yesterday hoping you’d post some good news!!

We love her up here in Canada too!

I see there were no good signals received on the 28th. I wonder whether Quest went under cover for the storm or the weather interferred with the signal. Any idea?

  4. Donna Says:

Yay Quest, hope she stays for a while. Thanks all!

  5. Melissa Says:

Nice to see she is still hanging out in MA; must
be feeding well with the passing migratory birds!

  6. Maureen in MA Says:

Very good news to hear!! Kyle was far enough off shore to be more of a wet nuisance for her. I’m concerned about her first winter Nor’easter though. Hopefully she’s found a good place to take cover if she’s staying thru the season!

@Paul – We got a few signals in the early morning hours on the 28th. The rest of the day’s signals didn’t transmit long enough to calculate a position, so they were useless. The presence of cover or bad weather could be to blame. We’ve added one of the best signals from the morning to the map if you want to take another look. It puts her in the same general area as she was in on the 27th and 29th.

Maureen, I share your concern. I’m more concerned about her being on the ground with prey as there are coyote and fox on the Cape and PF’s aren’t as agile on the ground as they are in the air. Quest should go where the prey is, so my guess is when migration thins out she’ll either follow the migration path or move to an area where there are non-migrating species. Anyone know if she’s bagged anything pigeon-sized yet?

Glad to hear Quest made it okay during the storm..Kyle, she is a strong girl..sounds like she knows what she wants and is really getting around. Love to see some photos.
