Syracuse/Seneca Towers falcon watch 7-17-14
By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK
Today was a different kind of falcon watch-Joyce picked Donna and I up and we dove off to Syracuse,NY about 80 miles east of Rochester where our old friend Pigott has a nest site, offspring (successfully fledged) female named Barb and an unanded mate. They reside on the State Tower building. We were lucky enough to see Barb on City Hall across the way from the nest building eating a small snack.
We took a break at a local pub while it rained and when we came back out and took a drive around we spotted Pigott and Barb flying between 2 buildings and disappearing a split second later. That was all the falcon activity we had for the morning/afternoon.
I must say I am so happy that Pigott has filled her life with a family-she sure is in a totally different environment from when she was in Rochester. From almost rural surroundings to a true city bird-my heart grew from this experience today even though we only saw Miss Pigott for a second or two.
We came home and had intentions of going downtown to see our juvies but Luzerne and Veteran were hanging out and flying back and forth in front of Donna and I from the west side balcony and we just couldn’t tear ourselves away from our eye level encounters with these 2. Many passings at no more than 20 feet away they had food and there was vocalizing and a stoop down into the gorge tree tops by Veteran that was pretty great to see. Imagine, we’re used to looking up at them and from my 16th floor Seneca Towers apartment building we watched the stoop below us. Wild stuff!! I got one pic of Luzerne as she was coming right at us with the sun behind her making it a silhouette shot.
We never made it downtown but we were smiling never the less! 🙂

Thanks for coming to Syracuse Mak, Joyce and Donna.
Hope with new falcons esp. Pigott we will have greater interest in the new pair, especially if they clean the nest area and make it more camera friendly. We have had some bad years lately. Thanks

Rita, it’s so nice to know Pigott has a new life and secure place to raise a family. It’s a win, win situation!
Bobbie, we went in for a cocktail and a pitstop-the rains came and forced us to stay and have another plus appetizers. We were there long enough for 2 pitstops! LOL 🙂

Thank you for you going to visit Pigott and her family! I’m especially happy you saw Barb as I was wondering how she was faring. I managed to see Pigott and her mate having a long bonding session in their nest box last night on the cam!

Thanks for the report, MAK. I don’t blame you and Donna for not going downtown. How could you resist that bird’s eye view of Veteran and Luzerne? While I am sorry for Fanny and Groucho, it is Pigott’s and her mate’s time now, and it is the way of the falcon. She is finally where she belongs, and doing what nature calls her to do.

I missed something – when was it discovered that Pigott moved to Syracuse? I knew she disappeared from BS but missed anything about relocating/gaining a mate.

Kathy, no need to thank me for going to see Miss Pigott-it was my pleasure! Just wish I had seen her for more than a nano second so I could bring pics to y’all!
Pat, I mostly just see Luzerne and Veteran fly past my window lasting a second or two-I can’t see the northwest corner (their favorite spot) from the west side balcony. Yesterday was a lucky day for seeing some flying!
Kathleen, Pigott was identified about a month ago as the new Syracuse falcon-she and her unbanded mate took over the site and have one offspring named Barb. 🙂
