Fledge Watch Report Catch-up! – 2017

By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.

Hi all!  First I want to thank my friend and fellow watcher MAK for taking the time to keep up with her fledge watch reports.  I know how very time consuming they can be.  Due to the long days of fledge watching, I have not been able to post any reports.

We had some very sad news yesterday about Charlotte.  It’s never easy to lose one of our young falcons. The falcon watchers work so hard to keep them safe.  Fly Free beautiful Charlotte.

I finally had a chance to look through my fledge watch pictures from the last week and wanted to share my favorites with all of you.  Enjoy!

    Great pics!!

Carol, you’ve certainly been busy through good and, not-so-good, times this season. It must have been beyond rough posting the notice about Charlotte on Imprints.

I love your photos here of happier times, including the one of B and DC flying in unison.

Many thanks to you, and all of the other Watchers and people who assist in caring for these magnificent creatures. When I read about Rochester Police, Animal Control and (not-so-ordinary) Citizen involvement, it makes me proud to have been a Rochester native. Wishing PEFAs and Watchers alike, safe days ahead.

In appreciation Carol for all you do.We all depend on your excellent pictures and reports.Do the best that you can and know that is fine with me,as i am sure with others. I feel sad about dear Charlotte, she must have lost her bearings to be flying low or at best landing on roadway.Such a loss. It has been a tough year in other areas as well, all the babies died at Hellgate and feel bad for Louis and Iris.Well, nature takes its toll. Thanks again.

I agree wholeheartedly with WLBarb. You, Shaky, MAK and the dedicated Rochester FalconWatchers are wonderfully committed to documenting Beauty and Dot as they court and mate.
Then we all wait, worrisome, for eggs to be laid and then HATCH!! As the eyases unfold, fluff out, and almost magically grow, feather out, squabble, beg for food, get banded, and fledge!! Too soon after, that they’re gone.
That is, until next year, when we hope to see the falcons return again, and resume their busy, brief spectacular lives.
This year has definitely been one of joy, trauma and tragedy. More than most, I think. The losses of Charlotte and Seabreeze are so very sad. At the same time, Ontario is a “champion flyer” and Rachel appears to have finally gained confidence in her flying skills. And who knows? Somebody Out There may have a sighting of Seabreeze once his tail feathers have grown in again.
Meanwhile, we’ll be watching from afar, in sincere appreciation for all that you do.

    Thanks Lynne!

Thank you Barb. We were all shocked by the loss of Charlotte. It’s never easy to lose one of these beautiful creatures. But she was so young and had so much potential. Such a loss. 🙁

The people that work downtown are wonderful. Over the years they have become more aware of the falcons living high above them. I’ve lost count of how many times people have stopped to ask me how the falcons are doing. 🙂

  7. Carol P. Says:

    Thank you so much Diane.

  8. Carol P. Says:

    Very well said Mary. Thanks!
