Eyes to the Skies

Morning watch 7-2-13

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

The starting temperature today was 61 (F) 16 (C) with fog and overcast conditions making it a dark morning.

When I arrived at 5:20am I couldn’t see any adults or juvies so I went searching on the east side. The fog was pretty thick at the tops of the tallest buildings so I may have just not seen Beauty or Dot.Ca (DC).

I returned to the Broad St. Bridge (BSB) where I could make out 2 juvies  up on the deck. I then took a ride up State St. to the Andrews St. Bridge to check the northern end of the territory. No adult PEFAs seen there either so I drove back to the Times Square building (TSB) area. From the hole (Aqueduct St.) I could barely make out the white of a falcon on the OCSR top ibeam south corner.

I thought it was DC and I would find out that I was correct a little later on. Looking toward TSB I could see Baron out on the well wall. And I got a tweet from Ei that it was him up there. Thank you very much! From where I was parked next to He’s Chinese I could see between the Philipone and Times Square buildings the faint structure of the jail tower completely engulfed in fog.

At 6:05am I looked to the OCSR and DC was gone so I drove up to the BSB where I found Dan in his spot on the south side. He had just gotten there and said DC flew back behind Xerox vanishing into the fog. A minute later I spotted DC flying down river to the north behind OCSR. At 6:18am I saw him return and land on the 2nd ibeam west corner of OCSR and Dan spotted Beauty fly to the deck.

A minute later cam watcher Annette reported the kids were being fed. Thanks for your help! And Larry came by to join us before work. About a half hour later Beauty flew up to cam 4 and DC went over to the south corner and took off immediately after landing out of sight.

Larry left at this time and 25 minutes later Dan left as well at 7:09am.  I decided to check the Brighton Site leaving the Beautyful one on cam 4, 1 eyas on the wall, 1 on the deck by the wall and 1 near the nest box. For the first time in 3 or 4 days Pigott was home for me to visit with her as I arrived at 7:30am. She was on the west side of the southeast extension 2 window ledges down.

She was watching starlings that are nesting across from where she was perched by the east end of the south side vent. A few minutes later cam watcher Campgee reported a second meal had been delivered for the kids downtown. Thanks so much! Pigott flew off to the west toward the front (north side) of the building.

While I drove around the building to look for her she went to the south side vent west end with her back to me as I made my way to the back (south side) of the building. I love playing cat and mouse with falcons! lol

Miss Pigott did some preening and at 8:22am she flew off, went in to a stoop over the trees to the southeast and pulled up after the small bird whipped into a tree for cover. She flew back and went to the west extension coming to rest on the southwest corner.

I drove around to a spot where I could view her from the front on the west side.

I stayed with her for nearly an hour and she left when I wasn’t looking. I drove around and waited for her to return but she did not so I drove back downtown. I arrived at Broad and Exchange Blvd. at 9:42am and pulled over in front of the Blue Cross Arena when I saw Beauty on the column above the nest box.

I drove over to the hole to watch and I found DC on the 2nd ibeam south corner of OCSR.

DC was preening so I switched my attention to Beauty who was watching young  Baron below her on the well wall.

I drove up to the BSB to look for Rosetta and Voyager but they must have been laying down. There were 2 workers in scaffolding on the east side (river side) of the Thomson Reuters building. All was quiet and I chose to end my watch at 10am. Tomorrow I will start my official fledge watch schedule of 5:20am until someone relieves me-most likely Brian at 2pm. I left for home having seen 6 PEFAs on my watch 3 adults and 3 juvies-if that isn’t reason to smile I don’t know what is! 🙂
