Eyes to the Skies

My best ever morning watch 1/29/11

By Rochester falcon watcher MAK

Let me just start by saying what a fantabulous watch I had this morning! It began with Beauty on the outstretched money bag hand of Mercury. She flew off and joined Mr.t over on the Frontier Communications Tower. I raced over there but when I arrived they had already flown back to the Broad St. bridge area. As I parked the truck I saw Beauty flying with a pigeon and Mr.t was following her up and down the river between the OCSR building and the Radisson Hotel until they came to rest on the northwest corner of the Rundell Library.

At this point he was getting frustrated. He made several attempts on the pigeons without success and went up to Mercury briefly watching the Beautyful one over on the library eating her breakfast. I was starting to feel sorry for him. Again he stooped hitting one of the pigeons stunning it but it managed to fly away. Back to Mercury once again to look over at Beauty. And more stooping no wonder he has been hanging out with Beauty for food cuz he’s not too great a hunter.ย  Still more stooping unsuccessfully and returning to the library where he landed about 2 feet away from her whining and begging for food. It was pitiful!

After a few minutes of begging they both took off up river with Mr. t twice trying to steal what was left of Beautys breakfast out of her talons before they landed on the base of Mercury.

Mr. t finally eating on the base of Mercury while Beauty watches from above on the money bag hand.

Watcher Dana arrived on the Broad St. bridge at this point where there was no good parking spots left due to a cheerleading competition at the Blue Cross Arena.ย  We both drove down to Aqueduct St. where I finished an extraordinary watch. I will finish my report with a pic ofย  Mr. t finishing up Beautys leftovers and the Beautyful one up on her favorite perch. Have a great day everyone! ๐Ÿ™‚

Great report, MAK. I loved the videos.

Facebook is a good place to put videos, but it restricts who can view them to people who have “friended” you. A better place to put them would be YouTube. It only take a few minutes to create an account, and then you can upload as many videos as you want by simply dragging them from whatever folder you have them in on your computer to the Upload box on the web page. Then anyone can view the videos without being your “friend.” (They don’t even have to log in to YouTube, which is a big plus for those who don’t like to create accounts online.)

Once you have a video on YouTube, You can copy and paste its link directly into your FalconWatch blog. Then everyone can view it by clicking on it.

I wouldn’t say he’s not a good hunter. We did see him hunt yesterday and we’re pretty sure he caught a smaller bird. That’s the key. He shouldn’t be going after Pigeons, which are very plentiful in that area. Being a Tiercel, he should be hunting smaller birds. I can count on one hand the times I saw Kaver bring back a Pigeon and he would usually drop them if he did get lucky and catch one. 99.9% of his prey were birds the size of Blue Jays and smaller. Rarely did he catch a Pigeon. Pigeons are too big for most Tiercels. I’m not sure why this Tiercel is attempting Pigeons, but I won’t pass judgement on his hunting skills just yet. After all, he’s in his adult plummage and made it this far. Hey, if he can get a free meal, why not take advantage! ๐Ÿ™‚

Exciting video to watch, and your narration was great. Have to feel a little sorry for Mr. T though.

  10. Donna Says:

No one really knows the age of Mr T but it does seem that every time MAK is watching him, he’s always begging for food from Beauty. He’s probably her age but just a wee bit immature. Maybe he will learn from her and be on his way soon. Who knows but he seems to like his free meals. ๐Ÿ™‚ Who wouldn’t? Maybe someone will actually see him stoop, catch and eat soon.

Like I said in my previous comment, Mak and I did witness him catch a smaller bird a couple days ago. This morning, he was just sitting with Beauty. No begging.
