Morning watch 2-24-11

Hi everyone! I arrived downtown this morning with no falcons in sight at first, so I took a ride around. After no success locating any I went to my usual spot on the Broad St. bridge and parked. I didn’t wait very long before I spotted Beauty land on Mercurys money bag hand. She was there very briefly and then she flew east towards Midtown. She came back into view and landed on the northeast corner of the Bausch and Lomb building. She was hunched over as if she were eating so I jumped in the truck and headed over for a closer look. When I finally found a good place to park below Midtown Mr. T had arrived and was watching her eat from another corner just above her.

Shortly thereafter he flew over about 10 ft to her left on the same ledge. He stayed there for a few minutes and decided to get closer.

He inched closer and closer after that and then flew around to land right in front of her. You can only see part of him in the next picture.

Is the B and L building a new hangout? I don’t recall that building ever figuring prominently in reports…?

Margaret this is only the second time I’ve spotted Beauty on B&L and both times she was eating. I believe some other watchers have seen her there in the past but I don’t know for sure.

Margaret – B&L = Bausch & Lomb. It’s not a building our Pefas land on frequently but both Archer and Beauty & Mariah and Kaver have landed on it occasionally. It’s a very nice building for Falcons, with lots of different levels. For whatever reason, they don’t land there frequently. Good question though.

Maybe it will come more into favor as a result of Mr T’s influence.

Oh, I know B&L is a gorgeous building, and there are lots of different levels, ledges for the falcons to sit, but do you think it could become a nest site? It’s interesting how the PeFas are choosing their own sites, and no one has really visited the Powers Building nest box, but even the new Pefas gravitate towards the Kodak Office site, almost to the exact spot where Mariah and Kaver nested for so long.

Just my opinion but I think the Powers Building nestbox isn’t attracting any occupants because it faces the north, which means no sun all day and most of our bad weather comes from the west and north.

Margaret – I don’t believe they’ll choose the B&L building as a nest site. In my opinion, Beauty has an established nestsite, the nest box on the Time Square bldg. and she’ll stick with that.
If I remember right, the nest box on the Powers Bldg was put in that position because it was in line-of-sight from the old nest box location on the Kodak tower. At the time, it was hoped that Mariah and Kaver would move to one of the new nest boxes.
