Eyes to the Skies

Morning watch 3-27-14

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

Twas 15 degrees (F) -9 (C) when I started my watch at 6:45am and this should be the last we see of the teens for a long time, hopefully not until next winter! There was partly sunny skies and very little wind

I found Beauty on the base of Mercury to start my day off in the best way possible as far as I’m concerned. She was just hanging out probably waiting for her mate Dot.Ca (DC) to show himself.

Since Pigott has not been seen in a couple days I decided to get over to the Brighton site (BS) earlier than usual to see if I could catch her at home. No such luck but as I arrived at 7am I did find DC on the east end of the south side vent with food. he was way back against the building so I had to drive out to the back service road to observe him.

I took a ride around the building to look for Miss Pigott but she was nowhere to be seen. When I got back I heard DC vocalize very softly then he flew north. I waited a few minutes and then as I was tweeting it out I got tweets from cam watchers Donna and Annette that DC was at the nest box with Beauty and food was involved. Thanks ladies! I opted to stay at BS a while longer hoping Pigott would show up but after an hour it was obvious she wasn’t coming so I went back downtown. Beauty was on the base of Mercury again and DC was under the northeast wing of the Times Square building (TSB).

I positioned myself on Aqueduct St. (the hole) where I could see both Beauty and DC. Beauty flew north and returned to the base of Mercury whining. At 8:48am DC flew to Beauty and mated with her-he almost landed on her left side but righted himself with a little maneuvering.

The whole thing took 9 seconds and when they were done DC flew over to the nest box calling for Beauty and she followed right behind him.

They had a bonding session according to Annette (TY) and then DC flew to the base of Mercury leaving Beauty at the scrape. I left the hole to go up on the Broad St. bridge (BSB) to see the front of DC and Beauty at the nest box.

I checked out the river finding ducks and gulls hanging out  and a log jam under the Main St. bridge.

I ended my watch at 9:05am with a smile knowing the weather is finally making a turn for the better and maybe Beauty will start laying some eggs! 🙂

    Me too 🙂

You mentioned in a recent report that Piggot’s behavior had been different in the last wk or so. What had you been noticing?

  4. MAK Says:

Pigott hadn’t been her usual energetic self in recent days and seemed to hang out in on the roof away from the edge more often than not. Like Tuesday morning the last time I saw her she seemed frozen on that northeast corner of the northeast extension-just staring toward downtown and turning her head only occasionally not constantly like she normally does. My opinion is that maybe she was ill or injured. There were a couple times that DC had gone in the cubby and she didn’t go in with him which I thought was different also. Boy, I wish she’d show up. 🙂
