Evening Fledge Watch – A Beautiful Summer Evening! – 8/6/14
By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.
I was just getting ready to head downtown when I received a text from Brian. He was downtown and reported seeing Beauty and female juvie on the Kodak Tower. By the time I arrived, they were both gone and Joyce was with Brian. I checked all sides of the Kodak Tower, but found no falcons there. While there, another tweet came in, this time from Dana. She reported that a juvie (we believe male) was on the northwest corner of the Xerox Tower. I headed down to the Broad St Bridge and found the juvie exactly where Dana said it was.

He kept moving in and out of view until he took off heading north over he old Midtown Plaza. I was joined on the Broad St Bridge by fellow Watchers Larry O, Lisa McK, Joyce, Brian, Dana and Dan. It was an absolutely gorgeous evening to be out looking for falcons, with temps in the 70’s (F) and no rain or rain clouds.
For awhile, we had no falcons in sight, but we did have two Black-Crowned Night Herons in the library tree and in different spots on the river.

One of the Black-Crowned Night Herons flew under the Broad St Bridge to the north side. A few of us walked over to the north side of the bridge. We couldn’t find the heron, but we did spot a falcon on the top arm of the Frontier Communication Tower. Too far to see if it was an adult or juvie.

It didn’t stay there long. We believe this was the same falcon that minutes later landed on the jail communication tower. It was an adult, but we could not tell if it was Beauty or Dot.ca.

The adult took off and again we were left with no falcons to watch. But that didn’t last long. Soon a juvie flew over the river from the east and landed on top of the jail communication tower. Joyce thought this was a female.

I ended my watch at 8:30 pm and this juvie was still on the jail communication tower.
During my 6 – 8:30 pm watch, we had Beauty, a female and male juvie (not ID’d).
Dan reported that he was on the pedestrian bridge at lunch and a juvie was in the falcon sucking tree. I was glad to hear that. Gives us hope that we may still have the privilege of seeing them in the gorge before they leave. 🙂
Goodnight everyone!
