Saturday Afternoon Falcon Watch (Noon to 2:45 pm) – 11/8/14
By Rochester Falcon Watcher Carol P.
Hooray for the weekend! It was a very cold and overcast afternoon, but at least it was light enough to see falcons. Now that the time fell back an hour, it gets dark so early. Well, at least there is always the weekend.
My falcon watch started at the BS location. I did not see any falcons there, but 100’s of Canada Geese were streaming over the building. Other than that, it was very quiet.
Next I checked downtown and found Dot.ca on the northeast wing ledge of the Times Square Bldg. Beauty was up inside a very dark OCSR elevator shaft.

Fellow falcon watcher Kathy O texted me that she and Lisa McK had been to the BS location and had also not seen any falcons there.
Since all was quiet downtown, I kept moving, wanting to check all the other falcon spots. While I was checking out Hawkeye and finding no falcons there, Kathy tweeted that there was a falcon at ST on the antenna. I arrived just in time to see a falcon on the antenna, but it took off soon after I arrived. I never did get a close enough look to see if this falcon was 99 or Billie.

I drove over to Maplewood Park to get a look at the west side of ST. Leaves were piled high in the parking lot. They were being loaded into a truck for disposal.

I caught up with Kathy O on the west side of the river, across from the ST location. It was too cold to stay out too long, so I continued down to the lake to check out Russell Station before heading home. It had been awhile since we’ve seen a falcon there. There were no falcons on the north side, so I drove back to the south side. From there, I could see what I thought was a falcon on the roof of the building near the center.

It was too far for me to positively ID as a Peregrine Falcon. I found a spot closer to the building, but from there I could only see the head. It was definitely a Peregrine Falcon, but I could not tell if it was a juvie or adult and it was eating.

At 2:45 pm, I ended my watch happy to see that a falcon was still at this location.

I looked at your tweet at about 3:00 and was at Russell Station by 3:15, Carol, but I didn’t see the falcon. Either he or she had left by then or it was playing peek-a-boo with me. I went to entrance off Kirkwood Road, the entrance off Mann Avenue, and the parking area by the creek that flows out to the lake, keeping my eye on the south side of the building as much as I could. Darn! Someday I’ll see a falcon there.

Pat – This falcon was really hard to see. It definitely had food and was far enough back on the roof so that you could only see the head when it raised now and then. I almost missed it. You’ll definitely see one some day! 🙂
