Eyes to the Skies

Fledge Watch 6-26-15

By Rochester Falcon Watcher MAK

It was mostly cloudy to start the morning with a temperature of 59(F) 15(C) but blue skies and sunshine took over nicely

I stopped to talk to Dan on the Broad St. Bridge for a few minutes before setting out to look for our falcon family. Beauty was under the northeast wing of Times Square and Cadence was on Crossroads. The Beautyful one flew off to the north and after sharing space with Cadence for a bit I went north as well. I found Beauty on the southwest cube and Dot.ca (DC) on the top arm of the Frontier Communications tower (FCT).  Genesee joined mom and dad soon after flying in to land on the southwest corner of the platform railing.  It’s now time for FCT days with the juvies where you never know for sure where they are up in all that metal unless you see movement or here them. Let the games begin!

They all took off and so I drove to the hole for a look around, finding Beauty on the base of Mercury, DC on the top ibeam west corner of OCSR and Cadence was still on Crossroads. Cadence started squawking and walking as her parents flew off. Once again I left her after a short time and went to the Andrews St. bridge to find DC on the top arm just as he stooped on some kestrels that were on the peak of City Hall. He flew back to FCT landing on the second arm. Beauty suddenly appeared carrying food with Genesee on her tail-they ended up on the platform then she flew up to the east side railing while he ate. When Genesee was done he joined Beauty up on the railing.

As I watched from the City Hall parking lot Genesee flew off then DC stooped on a small bird followed by Genesee who attempted a stoop at nothing-hey at least he’s trying to learn from dear old dad. Genesee then landed on the church roof before heading south after daddy. DC returned to FCT with Beauty and Genesee joined his sister on Crossroads. I found them together then I joined Larry on the bridge where he had a Black-Crowned Night Heron in the river.

Larry left for work after the kids dispersed from Crossroads. DC was on the top ibeam west corner, Genesee flew to the second ibeam below dad and Cadence had an ugly flight heading north. DC and Genesee left and I caught up with Beauty and DC on the FCT platform railing. Genesee ended up joining them as I pulled over on Church St. to watch. Cadence was on the platform eating as I could see her movements as she did so. Genesee went down and took over the food while his sister squawked about it and started walking around the platform.

Everybody hung around on FCT for a while-one of the juvies flew out and landed on the small tower disc then slipped off the back out of view. DC and Genesee left to take a nap on OCSR-dad on the top ibeam west corner and Genesee below him on the second ibeam. I noticed a young Kestrel fledgling perched way down low on FCT below Beauty. It flew away safely after a few minutes.

I checked out the river while everyone napped and was happy to see that the water level was down and there were shore birds on the flat rocks between the Court and Broad St. bridges. I left there for the Andrews St. bridge after DC and Genesee left OCSR. Cadence showed up at the Powers nest box. A while later she was gone but a falcon was now on the east side railing. It flew to OCSR and landed on the second west corner ibeam.

Joyce came to relieve me and I ended my watch around 12:30pm. It was a shorter (only 7 hours)  and quieter watch than the last few days which I really needed to get refreshed. Keep smiling everybody and have a good night! 🙂
