Carol P. – Fledgings Flying High Over City – July 2, 2008 – Morning

Another quick update.  Watching from the pedestrian bridge, we saw the fledglings flying high over the city of Rochester.  They’re doing great!

Lou and I decided to take a quick trip downtown for a closer look.  We saw Mariah flying above Xerox.  She headed northeast, but quickly returned.  That caused the 3 fledglings that had been on top of Xerox to take flight.  We had 3 fledglings and Mariah playing on the air currents high above us.

After awhile, the three fledglings settled on the north (shady) side of Midtown Plaza (soon to be gone) to escape the heat.

No sightings of Kaver or the other two fledglings.  I was only able to positively ID one of the fledglings on Midtown, Seneca.

Early this morning (7/3) around 6:30 a.m. the cameras caught both Mariah and Kaver in the nest box, bowing to each other.  🙂

Aaaaw, that’s cute about the mom and Dad! I missed them by about 15 minutes then. Grrrr……

How I wish I could join you watching young falcons learning their “ropes”. The excitement at my house today, was seeing a fledgling robin, clasping nervously to the back of a deck chair (wobbling and pooping on the deck) and obviously looking in all directions for a parent. Suddenly a harried momma robin flew in with a scraggly looking worm that the young one hastily swallowed and when mom flew off, baby followed ….It was a smaller show, but I was touched.

Thanks for the update, Carol. The buildings around Midtown Plaza apparently make siting and ID much more of a challenge than if the juvies were flying in and around the gorge. Can we assume that’s why the two who haven’t been seen aren’t considered missing?

  4. Rosamund Says:

June, I enjoyed your comment about the Robin. I have tree swallows in my backyard who always remind me of Mariah fearlessly dive bombing anything that gets near their nestbox, including myself.

  5. Brenda in Florida Says:

Perhaps Mariah and Kaver were bowing to each other and saying, ‘Well done!’

  6. Maureen in MA Says:

Why do you think it is that they haven’t headed toward the gorge yet, moving more into the city instead? Are there any disturbances in the area to discourage them? It seems unusual to me compared to last year.

  7. Kathy V Says:

I know..they were saying, finally their gone, I got you to myself….ha ha

  8. Rosamund Says:

Maureen, There is construction in the area where the fledges usually fly back and forth on their first flights. Just past that area there used to be three unused smokestacks. Two of the smokestacks were removed sometime last winter. So the area has changed for Mariah and Kaver and they are adapting different patterns of behavior to compensate .

  9. Carol P. Says:

Not to worry. All five fledglings were back at the tower tonite and all were flying very well. They then moved to the BeeBee Station. Next stop, the gorge? Let’s hope so!!! – Carol P.

  10. Maureen in MA Says:

Yes, let’s hope so!! Thank you, Rosamund, for filling us in on the changes to the area. It all makes sense. They will find their way to the gorge soon!
