Yesterday, it became clear that one of the juvies at the ArcelorMittal nest is suffering from Trichomoniasis (“Trich” for short), a parasitic disease that is transmitted through the digestion of infected carrier birds (like pigeons) and thrives in heat and humidity

This is having a devastating effect on our Greenfinches in particular. We used to have "beat them off with a stick" at one time - they would arrive in hoards and eat everything. Now, I would give anything to have one at the feeders.

Update

C&C's Ohio Peregrine Page
Update: The Trich-infected juvie from the Arcelor Mittal Steel Mill nest site is going for surgery this morning to see if the massive amounts of plaque in her mouth can be removed. If they aren't successful she will be euthanized, as she is still unable to eat on her own at this point. Thinking about her and hoping for her today!

Come on baby, pull through!

What are they doing for this baby??  The pigeon people use a product called SPARTRIX and the pigeons with very bad trich are cleaned up in a few days.

I'm guessing this is a severe case!  Sad

UPDATE!!!  Looking good!   clap

C&C's Ohio Peregrine Page
Good news for ArcelorMittal juvie! Let’s name her! Last night Laura informed us that the trich-infected juvie from ArcelorMittal survived the surgery. The plaque that was removed turned out to be a granuloma and not a product of the trich. We’re learning so much from this fighter juvie, and although we hadn’t heard of this before, we have since found out that a granuloma is a non-cancerous growth that can form as the result of trauma or injury. So, now there’s more reason to be optimistic that she can recover if she can start eating and gain weight. She is due for a re-check in two weeks, so we’ll report further as we know more. In the meantime, we’d like to consider giving her a name (so that we’re not just referring to her as the “sick” or “trich-infected” juvie. I’d like Laura to have the final say since she’s taking care of her, but we’re open to suggestions. We would like to stay away from human names (although last names can work) and anything too lengthy, but here are some ideas we’ve been tossing around: “Fracas” (a synonym for “fight”), “Oakley” (after Annie Oakley, the first female gun fighter), or “Ralston” (after the Utah hiker featured in the movie “247 hours” who had such a survival instinct that he cut off his arm to free and save himself).
