Boys will be boys….trouble lol
June 07, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:

What a day with 3 boys!!!  Started off fairly quietly-found Achilles on the roof with Mom, Marta in the nest box, Geddy one ledge down and Jet one ledge down from that!  Geddy & Jet had figured out how to pass the pillars, so back and forth they went!  Then Achilles took a lovely flight off the roof, over the parking lot to the south west, circled and flew back to the roof!!  Way to go Achilles!! Bob & I were joined by Irma. Now, the other boys…both were blown down a ledge lower each! Very windy day! Mom stuffed Marta–she was fed a least 5 times today!  The boys…not so lucky.  After Achilles flight, Mum rewarded with a bite. Then fed Geddy, then Marta…but not poor Jet.  Everyone settled for a wee nap, Achilles on the roof corner for abit, then jumped down on the roof out of sight.  Mom came in with MORE food for Marta, causing quite a raucus with Jet & Geddy, causing Jet to fall another floor lower…yes the lowest floor!  We had started to wonder about Achilles, so I was off looking for him, everyone else was waiting for Jet to fall when Geddy decided to try his first flight!  Unfortunatly, he hit the 5th floor window on the east side of the Harlequin building(yes that favorite spot) and came down!  Thanks to the lovely young ladies at HQ for finding him for us!  Bob got the net on him and we got him in the crate and he spent the rest of the day in quiet comfort!  So, now we have one in the nest box, one in the crate, one on the bottom floor and one MIA.   Jet spent the next 4 hours or so on that ledge.   Bob did escort some geese and their gosling to the river in the meantime lol. But still no sign of Achilles. Until I watched Quest, circle round and round, going over 240 building and HQ building.  Hmmm. Watched her float above 240, so I went over and around(Bob & I swore we heard a faint squeeing) then watched Quest land on the roof.  Next thing she is heading over to her corner at HQ….with Achilles in tow!!  They landed on her corner, then she took off over to the nest building and Achilles followed-he was home!!  Great flying!!!  He didn’t stay too long and headed back to 240! Meanwhile, Mark and Marion arrived, and Geddy was checked over and released to the roof!  He was up to the corner in no time!  By the time Mark & Bob got down from the roof, Jet was down!  He was quickly scooped up and up to the roof he went!  My cue to go home!!  Mark, Marion & Bob stayed behind til dark.  But first Geddy had to fly again, of course!  He ended up behind HQ!  Jet stayed on the roof, Marta in the nest box and Achilles, well, he took a bit of a fit and flew, and flew and flew!  Mark swears at least 5 minutes and he went FAR! Across Don Mills!!! Ended up on the Tridel building and there he was at dark.  No worries about him-his flying is spectacular and he will be home when he is ready!! So tomorrow, its Geddy and Jet’s turn for some spectacular flying–just stay up boys!

Cold, windy…and the boys loved it!
June 08, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills

Cathy Kerr Reports:

I froze. Irma froze. Bob froze. But the boys loved the wind!  Geddy spent the night on the 2nd floor ledge of the Harlequin building and was there for a few hours in the morning.  He made a nice flight to the top of the school bldg, then went back to the nest bldg and joined his brothers!!  All three are flying well,  tho Achilles is by far the best!  The wind is serving them well and Quest and Mac have been on hand to help them out. Now Marta on the other hand,  got blown down one ledge and has spent the rest of the day there!   Around 2pm mom brought food for her but first gave her a lesson in how to prepare it! Lovely e-chup chuping as Quest taught her daughter and the feathers were flying!! Not sure if she got much as mom then took it with her!  Now there’s a lesson lol.
The boys then got fed, and all was quiet as they snoozed.  Jet and a brother hung out on the nest roof top, flying occasionally.  Jet spent most of his day on the nest roof top, always flying home!  The other two were off flying about much more-really enjoying their freedom.  At night fall, Jet and his brother(we tried hard but he wouldn’t show us his leg for id) were on the home roof, the other brother chose another rooftop nearby and “little” Marta settled in on her ledge!  More fun flying to watch tomorrow–let’s just hope for some warmer weather…and a little less wind

 Great shots from the Watch
June 08, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills
Marion Nash Reports:

Rob sent in some great photos of the fledglings. The fledgling in net is Geddy. All 3 boys have had to be rescued once so far,, and the young female Marta still to take her first flight.
So far, all of the young fledgling males are doing ok, and holding their altitude :-)

Marta takes flight
June 11, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills

Marion Nash Reports:

Bob was the first one on site this morning and found that Marta had finally left the nest building. She was on the ledge 2 floors down 2 from the roof of 240 next door so we were pleased to see she had gained some height. She spent the morning there alone until the early afternoon when her brother Jet decided to drop in to visit his sister and the 2 spent time together playing, snuggling and peak touching it was very sweet but when mom flew over with food it was every fledgeling for himself and he flew off in pursuit of lunch leaving Marta flapping and yelling on the ledge.

2 of the boys got fed on the roof above her and shortly after she took another awkward flight around to the front of the building and landed on the ledge about 1 floor lower but still ok. She had not been fed the day before as the adults refused to bring food to her so low, only 2 floors up from ground so she was very eager now, flapping and yelling and running the ledge and we could see she was ging to go again so we had the net in hand ready to run to get her just in case. About 15 minutes later she took off across the street towards Harlequin and bumped a window and landed in the parking lot.

We slowly approached to try to catch her but she flew back across the street before we could get close enough to net her and again landed on the ground. We finally caught her in the net and checked her over to see if the window bump have caused any injury and found her to be just fine.

Shortly after we took her back up to the roof just above the nest to be realised just as we had for all 3 of her brothers but this time the bird bolted off the roof and across the street over my head wile I watched from below and Mark watched from the roof flew out of site well out of our site behind 255 Duncan Mill and now the search was on to find her.

Mark and I went looking for her and were joined by her name sake Marta Kline and Cathy Kerr and we looked for her well into the evening and cold not find where she had landed so we closed the evening watching the boys flying around like little F16’s hoping that from where ever she had gotten to she may see them and come to join her family but that was not to happen so if she is not back we will have to try find her again tomorrow.

Here's Marta

!!! Marta Found High And Safe!
June 12, 2016 - Toronto - Don Mills

Marion Nash Reports:

June 12th - 2016
Not to much flying today with the strong wind gusts but the good news is that we found Marta!!

When we first arrived we found only one fledgling on the back upper ledge at 240 and had only one quick fly through by Quest. We could not hear any squawking when Quest flew through but there was a huge event with relay racing going on at the back parking lot of the Harlequin building with hundreds of children and adults and lots of noise so we likely could not have heard them anyway. We focused again on a massive ground search for Marta in the direction and area that we last saw her fly off too, but no luck.

With all the noise from the event the sound was bouncing off the buildings and echoing all over and Quest and her boys seemed to be keeping some distance or perhaps it was just too windy so Mark and I decided to go and get some breakfast and come back.

While we were eating Kathy and Irma came to help out and parched themselves in a spot beside Harlequin out of the worst of the wind to keep an eye on the nest building and 240.

Mark and I arrived shortly after and just as we did we saw Quest fly in and land on an upper ledge of the east side of 240 and join one of her chicks who ran over to her wings flapping with excitement. As soon as we parked I went over to have a look at who was on the ledge with her while Mark went over to talk to Kathy and Irma to get and give updates. I was not there for long when I saw Quest on yet another ledge the fledgling I had seen with her was still in the same spot and another fledgling was on a lower elevation.

I pulled out my camera hoping to get some shots of the leg bands on the 2 fledglings to get a band tape colour and see how we had there but again with the wind they were back from the edge and I just could not get a view of their bands. As I looked at both of them I could see that the one on the top ledge was larger than the one lower down so I was quite sure in my mind that it was Marta, if only I could get a look at that band!!!

I radioed over to Mark and the girls to let them know what I was seeing and Irma and Kathy came over to have a look with me bringing with them the spotting scope. We were not long together when Quest flew off her ledge past and got Marta up and moving and we were able to get a good look, It’s red shouted Irma she’s home!

I managed despite the gusty winds and my excitement to snap a quick picture and was able to confirm that yes it was indeed her. We stayed watching her for a short time until Quest came in and fed her and like Marta had always done before she ate and plopped down for a nap.

With Marta found and no more flying from anyone Kathy and Irma headed home and Mark and I closed off the day. There were a few flights by at least 2 of the boys over to the Tridel building and 1 short flight from Marta out half way to Tridel and then back to the upper ledge of 240.

By darkness, we had all four fledglings in view, all high and out of danger!!!
