The hospital's wildlife center sees around 20 kestrels a year, in addition to hawks, owls, and even the occasional peregrine falcon – a Rochester favorite, which are known to nest atop the iconic Kodak Tower and Times Square Building.
While the wildlife rehabilitation center is partially funded through donations, a majority of the operating and nursing costs end up being covered by the hospital. But for Balonek, the welfare of the animals is more important than turning a profit.
