186 years ago today (also Friday the 13th) Sam Patch took his fatal leap over the high falls of the Genesee in Rochester. He was a daredevil who had survived a jump over Niagara Falls, but not this time. His body was found the following spring in the river at Charlotte, on St. Patrick's Day. He is buried in the Charlotte cemetery. The following is a doggerel that made the rounds after his death.
"Here lies Sam Patch, a man once world renownded.
He so loved the water, and by it he was drownded.
He sought for fame, and when he reached to pluck it
He lost his ballast and kicked the bucket."
